My 440 is in the same compression range as yours and I started with the MP 272/272 .455 lift cam. It was a bit on the conservitive side was a real good all around cam. The lugging and low end power was great and would still turn in the 5300 rpm area with good power. I just installed a Comp Cam 285/285 .562 lift roller cam and alum roller rockers, wow what a cam. The low end power isn't bad, but anything under 1000 rpm is usless, 1000-2000 is a little less then the 272 MP cam was 2000-3000 is about the same, but from 3000-6000 watch out, mega power their. It should be hitting the 500 hp area now, more is better.
But the roller cam is not a cheap deal to get into, if I were going to go a regular cam again I think I would use the 280 or 284 duration MP cam, the low end will suffer some, that is the reason I went to the roller.
If you have an automatic it kind of changes things as you will need a stall converter of some sort.
You can see my site for pictures and info, I am in the process of re jetting for the cam and will write something up when I am done.
