it'll be good for welding up some bracketry, subframe connectors and such, but i don't think it will be good for sheet metal. I don't know if there is something in the nhra rule book about welding with arc for a role cage. I know that with chromoly, you have to use tig welding, but other then that i don't know.
There are alot of good uses for a welder. one of the main tools in my tool shed, but I have a small wire feed. it's a 110v lincoln mig with gas. Absolutely love the thing. |

Roll Bars:
Chrome Moly must be tig welded. Mild steel can be mig welded No stick welding allowed on roll cages or bars But, you'll find a million uses for your stick welder, yes they can be set up for sheet metal on an old Mopar the metal is plenty thick enough to carry the heat. Just do a little at a time to keep the heat to a minimum. Check with your local welding shop they can set you up with the right flux and rod diameter to get a pretty good weld on sheet metal. I also wouldn't use it on any rear suspension stuff like 4 link brakets or spring pads, too much heat and metal gets brittle. I have an old Lincoln stick welder that I love..however in this house I need a 100 foot extention cord to get it close to the car.....I need an electrician.......bad.... |

I'm a certified ARC Welder. Welding's pretty basic when you get the hang of it. Unless you have lots of money to burn on rods & scrap metal, I would recomend contacting your local Junior College & see about taking a semester of basic welding before you strike your first arc on anything related to the frame & what not. Especially if you're going to be welding on pipe ... it's one of the toughest things to weld ... especially if you're looking for full-penetration. That sucks that you can't use stick on the rollcage, pull-penetration w/a 6010 rod is about the strongest you can get. The problem w/using MIG on the rollcage is that it doesn't have the penetration that you can get with a 6010 rod. Oh well ... such is life I suppose.
