i have an 84 ramcharger with a 360 that is getting a little tired. i'm planning on rebuilding the whole truck soon from bumper to bumper. Should i buy a new 440 or just rebuild the 360 and add performance parts? Will a 440 even work? there are no emissions requirements, yet, where i live in oregon, so i don't think that's a problem. but i imagine i'll need to swap out the tranny to match the engine. are there any major drawbacks to swapping out the 360 besides gas mileage?

RAM-MAN,
There is no substitute for cubic inches. Putting a 440 in there is a breeze, it will cost a few but to me WELL worth it. The EXTRA torque is great. Here's what you will have to change. 1) 440 Truck motor mounts. (Mopar magazines sell them) Approx $150 2) Different Exhaust Manifolds, headers work the best!!! Free to $550(numerous companys sell them 3) Different transmission. If you have a 4x4 727, you can put the GUTS from your tranny into a Big Block CASE. Free - $500 4) Radiator???? If you have a small one or if the hose connections are on the wrong side. free- $250 Ive done this swap a few times the best was the /6 change to a 69 440 WOW!!!! I had it in my 83 Ramcharger 2wd. If you pull a trailer or like to haul ASS this is the way to go. I was pulling my car from pittsburgh to indianapolis in to the nationals at 75mph up & down all hills. Any questions E me at V10nacuda@aol.com V10 |

A couple of other things to keep in mind:
1) If you have no body lift you will need to install a smaller brake booster from a 440. 2) The brakets on the front of the motor are not the same as your 360, easiest to get a motor with all the parts. The Booster, motor mount, trans cable, headers, ect are available from : http://www.bouchillonperformance.com/ They have a kit for the swap Check out this site on doing a 440 swap: http://msnhomepages.talkcity.com/Yos...swapindex.html And of course my page and pictures of my 440 http://discover-net.net/~greener/truck.htm |

another problem i've heard is if your swaybar is in the stock location, if you hit a bump hard it can crack/break the oil filter. that's easy to fix, just drop it down with a couple of steel spacers and inch or so.

I'm about to do this swap in my 85 W 350 crew cab next week. in addition to all below you will need a rear sump oil pan. your better off using a big block 727 rather than swapping guts. Big block tranny has a extra clutch. you will also need to have the tail shaft off your SB 727 put into the BB 727. I also would recomend a 205 transfer case the 208 wont hold up to the torque. I got almost $4,000 into this swap already and it keeps going up. BUT I WILL LOVE THOSE 450 PONY'S AND 535 FP OT TORQUE. by the way I'm in Oregon to if ya need any help give me a buzz.

Thanks for all the help, it looks like i've got a good bit of work ahead of me to get this all to work. i don't know if this will help at all as far as advice, but the truck is 4WD, with an NP205 case. it is relatively stock, no lift yet or anything, i was planning on doing it all at once, drivetrain, suspension, body work, etc. thanks again.
