Default swapping 440 for 383

If I take the 440 out of my Charger, and put a 383 in (temporarily), will it be difficult to bolt up the headers (which will still be connected to the rest of the exhaust system) to the 383 because it is narrower than the 440? Thanks for any input.

Greg

well since no one else seems to havbe any input here is my .02

if you can unbolt the header from the pipe at the collector it will probably be easier to slightly tilt the header to the head, then rebolt the collector unless you have somekind of crossover then that will probably kill your efforts....... are you giving the 440 away........hint hint..........

You will have to fight it. How much?

Depends on lot's of things, you will only find out by doing it.

Wish I had more info for you.

Thanks for the help, that is kind of what I suspected.

I am taking the 440 out for a rebuild. I have a chance to pick up a complete 70 Fury station wagon w/ a 383 2 barrel. I was going to drive the wagon for a while, then stick the 383 in Charger (which I would prefer to drive over the wagon) when I take the 440 out.

It sounds like it might be more hassle than its worth.

The width difference is relatively small, approx 1", so alignment will not be a problem without an H pipe. You will more likely encounter problems with the height difference which is approx. the same amount. You will be dealing with approx. 1/2" on each side but the full 1" closer to the ground and steering components.

If you decide to do it, keep in mind that the bolts to the collectors need to be backed off a little to allow the headers move enough to allow the header flanges to clamp tightly and flat against the heads or you could be prone to leaks around the gaskets.
