Default Running open Exahust Manifolds, is it dangerous?

Is running open Exhaust manifolds dangerous or hazardous to the engines health? If its just for a short amount of time, 5-10 miles or so?

Two problems I can think of. 1 - is fire from flames from the manifolds can ignite oil, paint, etc. 2 - When you take your foot off the gas, cool-cold air can rush in on the hot exaust valves and can warp or damage the valves. I've seen it done but I wouldnt advise it.

You will make less power and more noise with open exhaust. Depending on the pipe size approximately 18" of down pipe is needed to tailor the exhaust pulses and scavenge the exhaust gasses. Defeating the engineering principles for optimuim performance is not a good idea, considering enviornmental laws, which include OSHA noise hazards, EPA exhaust emissions and warranty liability and the negatives you bring to the Mopar arena. Questions should be asked, please do not take action on this endeavor.

Actually on my 77 Newport with a newly swapped in 440 (about 5 yrs ago, it mage more power up top. Until I took my partially clogged exhaust off from the previous 400 (pipes didnt fit hence open exhaust manifolds) It shot flames on decel. MY biggest worry was on the Newport the fuel line ran on top on the fram in that area. Once the car warmed up, I had to keep it running or else it wouldn't start from vapor lock. Also, I am a little uneasy with dumping straight exzhaust on to my fuel line. At least it was a metal line.

open exhaust manifolds will warp your valves and the life of your motor will be cut severely. also, the flames will burn your plugs, plug wires, and anything else in there....i would advise you to AT LEAST run it off dynomax, or hooker headers. i have dynomax headers on my 340 (1972 plymouth roadrunner) and it runs great uncapped. i can get low to mid 9's wether i have my glasspaks hooked up or not. email me at : tmezzenger@hotmail.com

Wasn't this question answered in your last thread about open Headers/No Exhaust Manifolds?
