Hello, am thinking about dropping in a 440 in my '83 150 4x4 to replace the tired 318. Want to pull my car trailer (loaded) plus a 9.5 ft camper. Is this wishful thinking for a 150? Any suggestions? Also, is the current 318 a swirl port head?

You might want to check out Mopar_Mudder's site. http://discover-net.net/~greener/truck.htm He has a 83 4x4 with a 440 and ive seen him post on Perfromance Chat and RAM truck chat on this site. The 318's didnt get swirl port untill 1986 and roller lifters in 1988. All this is on http://allpar.com
Let us know how your 440 project goes. If gas prices come down I hope to replace the funky 1/2 magnum 318 in my '91 RAM with a 440 also.

The swap isn't a real hard thing to do, just requires the right parts. I don't have alot of info on the swap on my page, but some good building it up stuff. Check out this page of a frien of mine, he has done a good job explaining what it takes to do it.

I'm just finishing up this swap in my 85 W 350 here's what I've had to get. First off a 69 440, a rear sump oil pan, engine brackets and mounts for a 4x4 truck some 2x4 are different, truck style manifolds must be center dump, or use headers which is a different list all together. Make sure you have all the 440 pullys and brackets, you will need a 440 truck power steering pump bracket, the car type won't work, a water pump housing that discharges on the passengers side, if you have a large power brake boost it will need to be replaced with a small one needs to be 10.5 inch. The distributor wiring needs to be longer, and once you get the engine in the valve cover on the drivers side will not have room to be removed unless you undo the mounts. I think this is most of it. Ohh and about $ 3,500 bucks good luck.

You can remove the drivers side valve cover if you have/use the smaller diameter brake booster, it also aids installation immensely. One other thing, if you're using an auto you'll need the truck kickdown linkage, or one off a pre '73 BB car, it's a 3 piece and will clear the firewall.
