Hello BBR, and welcome!! Yes we have seen the prob. If you go back into the older entries you will find tons of info. I believe one was titled "180 thermostat" which had alot of entries. The latest news is that there is supposed to be a flash update available in March. Hope this helps!!

My 99 dodge 318 just started pinging last week at 21000 miles. The truck started drinking about a quart of oil every 400 miles. I checked the plugs and voilla, #8 loaded with oil. The truck is going in on monday to get the plenum gasket replaced.

My 99 5.2 QC has been pinging since last summer - went in before Christmas and got told'That's normal operation'. Went back Tuesday night (due for a service)and the vacuum test shows that the plenum gasket is leaking - getting fixed next week. So why the delay in admitting it needed repair?

Just out of curiousity has anyone ever had any engine damage from this pinging? I have not heard from any techs or people from this site that have had engine damage from this and I have seen some trucks with higher mileage that have "pinged" for a long time.

Thumbs up

I just got my truck back and the pinging is GONE! They reflashed the computer and replaced the plenum gasket. No noticeable loss of power after the flash.

I just finished my intake gasket replacement.
This is what I found. The gasket was leaking in the back area, and it was still completely intact.
The bolts were tight, but the plate wasn't clamped!!!! The holes are not tapped deep enough. I left the plate off and installed a bolt, and it snugged down firmly but the washer would still spin on the bolt! Just a QUALITY CONTROL problem. I guess in takes 3 years for them to find it. Now I get to change the cat converter as my truck has in excess of 5 lbs. of back pressure in front of the converter. Has anyone else seen this?
