Question 833 hemi tranny? any diff?

OK fellas is there such a thing ? 18 spline or 23 spline(i dont have #'s) and does anybody know what a complete auto to 4 spd conversion is worth(hump, pedals, console, pistol grip and all hardware) i maybe able to pick this up really cheap before the car goes to the crusher(the guy is a scrapman and dont really care about restoration)oh its a 70 B body frame is broken and roof is missing it wasnt a convertable so that cant be real good but the hump pedals and all the clutch linkages are there the pistol grip i already have and console from another 70 GTX

I believe the Hemi and 6-Pak cars were the coarse spline and the rest were the fine spline. Not really a problem, use the clutch disc with the right spline count with either pressure plate and you're in business. Not a clue on value, maybe some other readers can help there.

Default 833 tranny

As far as I have ever read ,the Hemi tranny was the 18 spline that also came in 440 six pack cars as well. How much stronger than a 23 spline I do not know, but everyone has said they are stronger.

I believe the hemi/6pak A833s utilized a larger input shaft with 18 splines. Because of the larger diameter shaft they probably are stronger. Both of my cars have the 23 spline unit -- one behind a 383 and one behind a 440 -- and I haven't had any problems with either one.

I don't know the exact details on the spline count/bearing retainer size per application, but I have seen some prices on E-Bay for some parts.
The 4-speed center console I saw for sale for $400!
I think the bent "b" body shifter may sell for $100?
I'm not sure about the pistol grip type shifter if it has one?
The aluminum shifter plate and shift rods can get $50+ (maybe $100?)
The pedal assemblys usually sell fairly cheap, probbably under $50? (unless you find someone who really need them?)
The Z-Bar, piviots and other clutch linkade is being reproduced which keeps the price of used parts down.
The transmission itself usually sell fairly cheap unless it is a 18-spline "Hemi" transmission?
An original steel clutch inspection cover can sell for big $$$, some for sale at the Mopar Nationals were in the $100 range?
I'm not sure what a factory transmission "hump" sells for?

If that junker car has power windows, I may need some parts off it

Just curious, and the car sounds beyond saveable, but was that GTX a Hemi or 6 pack car? You said the tranny is the 18 spline, those only came in 6 pack and Hemi cars, I think they came in 440 magnum cars too. If it is a Hemi or 6 pack car, that really sucks it's gettin junked. Hell, it sucks its getting junked, regardless of the motor.
I'll give you some prices I paid for my e-body 4 speed stuff. Tranny hump-$100; Pistol grip with shift mechanism-$280; Pedals-$75; Shift rods, I don't have them yet, but I've seen them go for about $125; Console, I'm not using one, kinda going for a stripper theme; 23 spline trannies go for about $125-500, depending on condition and what the seller thinks its worth; 18 spline trannies go for about $600+.

Hope this helps,
C-ya

18 spline transmissions were used is all 440 and Hemi cars.
You should get at least $500.00+ for it if it is all there.

Does the car have any power brake components left on it??

I dissagree with the "18 spline in all 440s"...IMHO it was just 440 6 pacs and Hemis...

Default 18 spline trans usage

From right out out of the 1970 parts book
The listing for a 4spd transmission assembly is as follows;

w/426 and 440 Eng., w/4 Speed
Trans., A833 70 8cyl fits B,J,R,W. #3410683.

Does not list a different part for 4bbl or 6bbl applications on 440.

Hope this clears it up for you

Max, maybe you should take it down a notch.
No one here knows everything, that is what makes this a great place to be, to share knowledge and get answers.
The proof is in the pudding, that is why I offered proof.

Here is some more out of the parts book.
For 1970 part numbers for 11" clutch disc 426, 440 Eng. part#3410161
11" w/383 Eng part#3410160

So obviously all 440's and 426 share the same 18 spline input

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, but if you are looking for one, maybe it's time to hang up the moderator hat and move on.
We are all just friends and Mopar junkies here so lets keep it that way.

Default 18 vs. 23

I'm no expert but as I recall a lot of options were allowed during the time and I recall hearing you could choose which clutch you wanted and which trans you got also. Many chose the heavy duty units which is why I belive there are some 18 spline in 440's. Personally I have never heard of a 23 spline that was in good condition that couldn't handle anything thrown at it. Just thinking out loud.

Hmm, interesting about all 440s or just 6pak 440s getting the 18 spline. I've always heard that only 6pak and hemis got the 18 spline but I've never bothered to check if that info was accurate...

I was thinking about this yesterday and I remember another difference between the 23 spline and 18 spline trannys. It's not so much a tranny difference as it is a mounting difference. There are two type of transmission cross members and each type uses a unique mount.

Alright, I've thought about it, and I've decided that the 18 spline comes in all Hemi and 440 Magnum/Commando and 440-6 cars. Remember that sublime 70 Challenger R/T with the black vinyl top and interior, trunk rack, hood blackout, side stripes, restored by John Balow at MCR, www.musclecarrestorations.com , This car had the 18 spline tranny, and it's numbers matching. But I have seen 440 Magnum/Commando cars with the 23 spline tranny, claiming it was the #'s matching tranny, so maybe you could choose which tranny you wanted in these cars, like Tarrbabe said.

Remember everybody this is mother mopar we are talking about anything is possible. Remember the Darts that were supposed to get the /6's and they put 318's in them for one shift because they ran out of /6's. I have seen in lots of books that 68&73 roadrunners came with black horns but mine had a purple one when I bought it. I talked to another guy that had lots of 73's and all his had the purple ones. Another was that they said you could never get the SE option with the R/T option on the Challengers. You just never know. later shawn

Default 18 spline

My wife's charger has a 440 magnum with Dana 60 the factory installed a 18 spline 833 trans, and it's a 1972 charger rallye with airgrabber hood.

But the 400 and 383 engines used the 23 spline 833 the same as the smallblocks.
