my roller rocker set came with springs for spacers.I am making alum. spacers instead. How much side clearance should I have?

I wouldn't want more than .005" side clearance. But there's a problem, aluminum spacers rubbing against aluminum rockers is not good because aluminum/aluminum galls badly. I would make the spacers allowing for a .015" shim (steel or brass) to be inserted between the rocker and spacer(still ending with the same .005" clearance). The shims are available for MP. That should give you good service.

Comp Cams spec out .030 on their Pro Mags that have the solid spacer. Why don't you want to use the spirings?

springs create to much drag. And yes I am using mp spacers with alum. spacers.I thought the idea of roller rockers was to reduce drag(and add hp).the springs feel tight.

thanks,
Jeff

There is another reason no to use springs(in my humble opinion), that is to eliminate any possiblility of the spring holding the rocker in such a position to retain some pressure on the pushrod. Any pressure on the pushrod helps to keep the lifter from turning. This is especially critical on a SB with it's 59 degree lifter bore and resultant wierd pushrod angle (even worse on W2s with offset rockers). I have always had lifter/lobe wear problems with W2s/ ultra radical flat tappet cams.

Don't let that rocker side clearance vary too much or you could have valve timing variations from cylinder to cylinder.
