Default How do I retrieve Diagnostic Codes?

I've got a 1999 Ram 2500 with the 24v Cummins TD. I have recently been experiencing an intermittent "check engine" light that clears itself. Is there a way to retrieve trouble codes without an OBD-II reader? I've tried the on-off-on-off-on ignition cycle used on other Chrysler products, but dont get any flashing indicators or codes on the odometer.

Thanks in advance,

Neo
