Stock 440 RPM
What would be the highest a stock 440 HP could rev too?
The reason I'm asking is that my dad let someone hammer on the RR before we tore it down (last fall) and the guy shifted with it at 6500RPM. Is that rather high??It seems to be... Or is it just a little above normal? Would that be fine, or should I try not to shift that high? Thanks! |

You can never rev too high in someone else's car. Or so it seems.

From what I've seen, a factory stock 440 should be shifted somewhere between 5000 and 5500, since they are rated for peak power at around 4800 I think? 6500 for a truly stock 440 seems pretty high to me. I wouldn't take a stock 383 near that high and it is a higher RPM engine than a 440. I'm pretty sure that a stock 440 couldn't possibly breathe at 6500, there would have to be some major mods done to improve airflow to get a decent VE at 6500 RPM. You said it was in a RR, is it a six pack engine? A 6bbl engine should be able to rev the highest out of any of the 440s, although I still doubt there would be any useable power past 6000. Any other opinions out there?

I just wanted to know what a STOCK 440 could rev up to.
The 440 in my Roadrunner is not stock, torker 440 intake, 2" headers, solid cam, ported 906 heads, holley 4bll double pumper. It also has non stock valve springs. Basically i wanted to know if that was high, because now I know at least it can handle that much RPM, though it DID dent the valley pan gasket (LARGE dent too..). |

Stock 440 R.P.M.
6500 rpm for a stock 440 is like playing your own version of "the weakest link", and you'll find it in a spun brg. or a rod bolt failure at some point. "stock" 440's are only intended for around 5200 rpm as much by cam and head design as anything else, ie; oil pan capacity, oil pickup dia., balancing, etc. etc. If you've got it tore down now, before it goes back together, replace the rod bolts (A.R.P.) and size the rods as insurance against that previous "stress"(6500). Also, check the piston pin bosses for cracks and the bores for "galling" after that rpm.(pre-'71 stock pistons only had a .120" pin oiler hole, later had it opened to .200", this is also a fast recognition method of the earlier higher compression height piston without measuring)). Usually, they can be re-pinfit at around .0008". Just my "2 cents" .
