Default Steel 340 crankshaft

Can a crank be repaired? Magnafluxing revealed a crack in #1 rod journal radius. I was told immersion welding can be used to repair damaged cranks. Anyone have experience with this?

It sounds hokey to me. I would get a new crank. A crank is very highly stressed. Once a crack starts, it will continue until it breaks through. It will cost more than the crank if you blow up your engine.

Default steel 340 crank

Have a good shop pre-heat, and weld the radius.( fill the undercut fillet). If unsure of their mettalurgy, tell 'em to use stainless. Then regrind using an .060" radius, stronger, and a good fix up to approx. 500 H.P. Just my 2 cents.

A lot depends on how hard the crank will be used. It's not uncommon to find shallow cracks in the radius fillet, sometimes they're only a few ten thousandths deep and won't cause a problem in a near stock motor.

crank repair is possible, but frankly, i wouldn't rebuild a motor with a refurb'd crank. I would put the money down for a new or undercut used one (just for piece of mind)
