overhanging head
I have a turboed engine with o-rings in the block. Now i have just noticed that the head diameter of 3.990 is larger than the bore diameter of 3.916, now this is on an AUS Hemi 265 engine with big valves on it. So in effect reverse to normal squish( standard they are the same diameter). SO is an overhaning head technically a problem when it comes to o-ring/gasket sealing & pinging, or in practice doesn't it make a difference. And if not what diameter should i get a new copper gasket made to.

Yikes! Somethings dosn't sound right. Were the heads and block machined for this? By the same shop? Is there enuff of the O ring to mate on the flat of the head. These things should be looked at.
If the O ring enters the open area of the head, I say theres a problem. (I'm Not an expert) I figure the deck of the block and heads should be right on top of the O ring. But like I said... (I'm Not an expert) |

The o-ring still seals with the head with about 80thou clearance to the combustion chamber. So it's more about the inner edge of the head gasket not having the head clamping on it, unless i get a gasket made to the head diameter. So i'm also wondering whether this design can cause pinging, near the edge of the head, as there is not much airflow. Even tho it's an open hemi style chamber, without squish from factory, would the larger head diameter make it's design even worse.

This is something I think that theres no concern over. If the gasket is in the clyinder area, theres concern. I know this is not the case. Since the gasket has area exposed, area faceing the head, theres little to worry about. There will be no contact with the piston.
You said you worry about pinging? I don't think that'll happen. Unless it was prone to pinging when factory stock. Getting a bigger opening to rid yourself of worry is an option. How much is a custom gasket? And, do you really need it? |

Jkat, for information on Hemi 6's try this site http://www.moparmarket.com/ . The site is some what closer to home and the Forced Induction Forum may be able to offer additional information.
