Default Just how good is this 318?

I own a 93' Dodge Dakota with a MPI Magnum 318. How good is this motor compared to other 318's and what is its potential? Is there much I could do with this engine aside of a blower or NOS?

The problem with your 318 lies with the fact or maybe not, that you have to pass emmissions. Even if you don't, the computer limits the MAX output of the engine.
There are some great things from Hughes engines and MoPar performance for the truck and/or engine.
Theres no reason you can't S/Charge the engine and do the exhaust real well. If you port your heads out, the power will rocket.

My question is: how much are you willing to spend. For about half what a supercharger would cost, you can buy an MP 360 Magnum shortblock. For about half that you can do nitrous.

These seem to be pretty quick and dirty solutions to me.

Hey Doug;

I would get that for a base engine to work on while I drive the truck. Although I had a problem with positive piston with the 10-1 short block assem. I'd do a 9-1 with thick head gasket and a mild S/Charge.
Sorry, I can't put much stock in the creates with all the negitive write up's here on the web.

Could stroke it I suppose, but the cfm will need to be increased also, you know extra swept volume etc...

Well, before we get crazy, lets fined out the intended useage and if we have to pass emissions. Then, how deep the wallet is. (LOL)

Well then, I guess doing a stroker , S/Charger and a Nos fogger system are out huh? If I had a choice of 1 myself, as if they all costed the same, it would be a S/charger. Then the exhaust.

I was just thinking the stroker might strain a limited budget, what about a 360 from the wreckers & rebuild it as money allows.

Andrew - What Fast One says would be the lowest impact to your wallet, and Rumblefish is right about the crate engines. I guess the point is, is that there are lots of ways to go, depending on your wallet and time limitations. Me, I'd have a good local shop build a junk yard 360 shortblock and when it was ready, have them do a stock rebuild on your heads and drop it in. You will have some serious fun with that appproach. Total cost could be well under $3,000.00.
