Default Distributor question for my Big Block?

I am going to buy a MSD Pro-Billet distibutor for my 383. I want to buy the 440 distributor so I can use it on either block. My question is where can I get the spacer for the distributor to make it fit the low deck block? Any help would be appreciated.

You might ask MSD if they will sell you the shaft for a 440 and buy the 393 unit. It is very easy to change shafts. 15 min job. The spacer from MP is very expensive, So the new shaft should be the cheaper way to go.

Default Distributor question for my big block?

I always thought you bought the Dist.spacer to lenghten a 383 dist.for use in a 440[440 has higher deck so you need to add spacer]

As the 440 is a taller block, the distributor is further away from the cam and therefore the shaft is longer. That being the case, you would need a spacer between the distributor and the block, on a 383 with a 440 dist. There is no such thing as an extension for the shaft, as it would not be reliable.

i just did the very same thing that you are asking about. i called msd and they said that they would sell me a new shaft for about $40 (if i remember right) to convert my 383 dist to 440. summit sells the mp spacer for $45 so i figured i'd spend about the same either way after shipping (i order from summit quite a bit). therefore, i just tacked the spacer order on when i got the dist just to avoid having to get a new shaft from msd. i figured it was easier. anyway, getting to the part YOU care about....

the bottom of the dist (before the shaft) is tapered into two steps. the top steps on both disty's are the same, as they should be so that they seal to the block right. the second step is slightly different. on the mopar dist it's 1.25" and on the msd unit it's 1.5". not sure why it's different but it is. anyway, the mp spacer only allows for a 1.25" dist so i ended up machining mine to 1.5" to accompany my dist.

long story short. don't go the spacer route. call msd and get the 440 shaft. then get a 383 dist for your current motor.
