Question Changing fuel filter?

I recently bought my first deisel and it has 58000 miles on it. I do not know when the last time the fuel filters where changed. I plan on doing it soon and have a few questions abought it. Is there a special bleeding procedur or do you just fill the filters before you put them on? How often do you change them. Where seems to be the best/cheapest place to get them? Any tips for a newbie would be apreciated.

Thanks.

Is your truck a 12 valve or 24 valve?
I never pre-fill my canister before installing them. Mainly due to the fact that you're getting unfiltered fuel into the injection system.

For a 24 valve, after you install the new filter, just loosen the bleeder valve on top of the filter housing. Bump the starter about 3 times. This causes your lift pump to run for about 15 seconds. 3 times should be plenty to fill the canister up.

For the 12 valve, after you get the filter re-installed, loosen the bleeder valve and prime the filter with the primer button on the drivers side of the engine. It below the filter canister. I just feel for it. Pump it until fuel comes out of the bleeder valve. I usually pump on it for a minute just to make sure.

make sure you tighten the bleeder valve when your done.

I usually stop by the Cummins shop for filter. You can order them from Geno's Garage at some pretty good prices. www.genosgarage.com

I found that my local Cummins shop sells the filters for almost the same price as Geno's, so you can save the shipping.
