Default 318 in a 70 satellite performance

i'm new to the mopar thing totally so i have some questions. i'm getting a 70 satellite with a 318 in it. i want the car to go low 13's on the motor and 12's on the bottle yeah i plan on spraying it. i wanna build the 318 to be different. what will it take for a 318 to pull these times is it posiible? the car has a 904 in it and a 8-1/4" rear. i was thinking 340 heads, big cam, more compression, single plane intake, a 750 cfm carb, and 1-3/4" primary headers. along with a decent converter and 3.90 or 4:10's in the back. what do u guys think?

13's on a 318...in a sattilite...now theres a project for you...the first question I have is do you want this to be streetable on a regular basis??the second I am going to ask is aprox. what does it weigh...

I am not going to tell you that it is impossible, because you can go as fast as you can afford, also 66cuda273 is runnibd 12's on a 318...
what I am going to suggest is you concider an engine with mor inches,if you really want a streetable 13 sec small block,a 360 stroker is a good start, but you would need a 727 trans instead of the 904,the 904 is a excellent choice for mild street,or pure strip, but it cannot take the beating of a street machine...

have no clue how much it weighs guessing 3600 lbs? its gonna be a street strip machine and do some occaisional cruising. how about the 8-1/4" rear is it strong enough? i want to do the 318 cuz its already there and its in my budget, i have access to a set of 340 heads already and i will be looking for more goodies @ the swap meet coming up at e-town. so the 904 is good for mild street or full race, no in between? well i have been doing a lil digging on the net and it seems like making 300 hp from a mild 318 isn't hard to do so i figure that making 400 shouldn't be too bad.

If you want a 13 second 318 satellite it won't come easy with all engine. I have a 71 Satellite with a 318 in it that i'm currently building a 440 for. But if you really want to keep the 318 and get it into the 13s, i'd suggest getting forged pistons, and connecting rods and "O" ringing it, and then throwing on two turbochargers. You'll make 400+ horsepower easy and it will be streetable and best of all you should get a minimum of 15mpg (more likely it'll be close to 20mpg). The nitrous shouldn't be much of a problem either just make sure you build the engine with 7 or 8:1 compression because the turbos make up for the rest. Don't go over 125 horsepower nitrous shot though, more likely to break something especially in an engine only meant to handle 250 or so horsepower from stock. The whole setup should cost around $2000. Turbocharging isn't that expensive if you can find some cheap turbos. Hope this helps.

Thumbs up 318 Satellite = the car that hooked me onto Mopars...

I don't know about quarter mile times, but back in the 80's when I was in high school, an older friend of mine drove his father's '72 Satellite with a 318 in it regularly. *Very* fun ride, and the car that hooked me onto Mopars.

Let's see, his father was a mechanic and bored that lil' 318 .030 over, slapped some headers on it, new intake, rebuilt the heads and put a big carb on top. Wind it up and put enough fuel through it and she'd scream well enough.

Plus, Mopar Performance does offer cast 360 cranks that fit into 318's now without cutting them -- with a .030 overbore, you can make your own Chrysler 350.

I'll see if I can dig up some parts numbers...

your 8 1/4 rear end is realitively strong, but I do not know how much it will take...

if your car weighs 3700 pounds,it will need 300 REAR wheel HP to run 13.5s,that means apx 400 HP at the crank, that should not be too hard with ported heads, and a mechanical or roller camshaft, also headers are a must,I will do some thinking and see what I can come up with...

as for the 904,yup,mild street or full race,no in between, they have a lower first gear than the 727 making them better for drag raceing, but the cannot take the constant beating of of a 400hp+ daily driver...

one more thing,in order to get 13.5's with 400HP,you would have to have an absolutely PERFECT setup...gears,tires,and stall, and since this is almost ALWAYS imposible,or impracticle, you may need as much as 500HP...it would be FAR more econimical in the long run to build a 500HP 360 than a 318,a 360 core is only 150-200 dollars, where the extra work, and durability lost with the 318 could EASILY run 1500-2000 dollars...

If you are planning on low 13s at that weight you better have a hole lot more than a 318. It will not happen with a streetable engine. Till you put enough into it to run those type of numbers a good mild bigblock would be a cheaper solution.

Default 13 sec Satellite

sohc_boy
I am with most guys 13 sec 318 Satellite
For the money to do that
I would suggest a 440 727 with 8 3/4 3.91
cam and headers will get you into 13's

Just my opinion
Fred..

With the 318's putting big cams in the idle quality drops fairly quick, just thought I'd mention that.

One of my 318's had a Crower hydraulic cam, 244/244 @ 0.050, .543 / .543 lift, 110 LS, forged pistons ( flat tops / valve reliefs ), ported the 318 heads with big valves, Offenhauser manifold dual plane, 9:8:1 comp, 750 Holley ( was a bit big ), & all the other million odds "n" ends..

On the dyno it made 300 HP @ 5,000 rpm at the fly wheel, then the ignition started to play up & couldn't finish the test, considering the specs of the cam there was still a lot of rpm to play with, so the HP would have been way past the 300 HP number..

Needed plenty of stall & gears, would fish tail down the road very nice when you hit the pedal, wasn't much fun in heavy city traffic at summer time..

first off,I think you will have more fun with a small block,a 360 will easily propel your 3700 pound car to a 13 second quarter...I know of several 360 combos that would give you the performance you want, the first is a stroker that propels a 3700 pound 67 coronet in 12.2 seconds and is street driven occasionally, the second is an unstroked 360 that puts a 4100 pound VAN down the quarter with an average of 14.0,and a best of 13.8...and is daily driven...if you are interested, let me know...

well guys thanks for the reply's. i think i'm gonna stick to my guns and try and build the 318 up, i don't mind a high strung motor so an obnoxious idle, high stall converter and short rear gear won't bug me much. hmm turbo's that sounds like it might be fun. does anyone know how much the thing really weighs?
its a 70 sport satellite with a/c.

Cool

A frend of mine is running a 68 charge with a 300 horse 360 crate motor and is pulling 13.90's i'm not sure on what tires he's running or suspention, shock, leafs,if its your first build up go for it,down the road try a big block and feel the difrence, also the 360 is putting out more torque...speedfreak.

Well, my 71 Satellite weighs around 3900# I believe w/o me. Considering the different body style for a 70 Satellite, I'm pretty sure it's a bit lighter. I'd guess around 3600-3750#.
Once again, I'd totally recommend turbos. They have all the advantages. It'd be a streetable combination, you'd get a ton of horsepower out of the 318, you'd get great gas mileage, and it's not too expensive to do the setup. With twin turbo chargers, one spools up fast for low speeds so you'll have lightning fast 0-60mph times as long as you can get the car to hook up, and the second turbos spools for higher speeds so you're still pulling hard up to probably 80-90mph, and then unless you have an overdrive tranny, you'll still be pulling fairly hard but not quite as hard as from 30-70mph. I'd say you could easily get low 13's out of the Satellite first time at the track and then once you got used to the car mid to high 12's. Another good thing is that turbochargers like low gearing, so 3.23 rear gears are more than enough. So that means you'll have a higher top speed. With 3.91 gears it's probably around 110-120mph, but with 3.23 it'll more likely be around 130-150mph. Course who the hell drives a 70's car that fast anyways........unless at the track. If the turbos still intrigue you come over to Moparts.com and ask questions there about the turbo engine. Find a guy with the alias "Feets". He's the turbo guru over there. The guy built a 440 twin turbo. Did it on a budget though for around $2800 I believe and is now having a few problems with it. Best bet is to get a machine shop to build it just so there's no huge surprises. Anyways, if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'll try and keep an eye out for any posts about turbos.
