Blown head gasket,small block
Head gasket blowed on my drag car after only 6 passes! Used head studs, Fel Pro #1008 o-ringed gaskets. Did not re-torque heads after I broke in the camshaft. Had the heads surfaced but did not have the block decked. I have heard in's and out's about o-ringing the heads. A local engine shop I trust said the X head was not really thick enough to o-ring. Said he had seen them crack before. Put valve seals on to keep oil from getting into the cylinder to prevent detonation. I thought I had all my bases covered. Total compression is about 12.0 to 1. I really need help with this problem. Thanks GB

Blown head gasket
I built a 340 for a friend last year and he used X-heads(ported & polished) w/72 340 block but I o-ringed the block and used copper head gaskets from SCE(.060" thick) with +.025 deck height and a flat top Venolia piston. Motor had 11.3 to 1 comp. with a 64 cc head. He wanted a nitrous motor so I went with a 274 278 deg @ .050 roller w/.631 lift and he uses a 200 NOS shot. The motor has run a best of 6.61 in 1/8 mi. and has no signs of leaking or blown head gaskets. Do you run NOS? 12.5 to 1 is the limit with the 1008 gaskets!! Also check your tune up. Timing is critical. The small block w/ X-heads should need any more than 35-36 deg total on the motor. Wedgehead

I've had better success with the standard Fel Pro "blue" head gasket(#4553 I think) when using iron block and iron heads. The #1008 is really for aluminum heads.
You don't have to cut O ring grooves, you can cut receiver grooves in the head. They are .004"-.006" deep and the head gasket ring fits in the receiver groove. Or you can O ring the block. Always torque the heads three times: once when assembling the engine, retorque after the engine has run about 5-10 minutes, the final time after the first race. They will pretty well stay there after that. Seat the stud well in the block(use blue locktite) don't force the studs down in block with double nut/wrenches you can crack the block. Use Moly grease on the SAE threads, torque to 100-105 ft. lbs. |

As for o-ring your block tha would be nice but this would mean disassemble and dragging it to the machinest right? People for many years have had succsesfull engines without this. unless you had extra money to blow, I would not do it. as long as every thing is square no warpage 12:1. I have run 13.5:1 before with felpro blues. With no prob on a small block ford! which only has 4 head bolts around each hole! Make sure your block is good and flat!

Can I get copper head gaskets for a .030 over 360?

yes you can, that is .010 smaller than a stock 340, and to o-ring the block just requires you to get the cutting jig, looks like half a softball with two joysticks coming out of it. check PAW for it. It comes with the wire also.
