Default Green Bearings with a SureGrip Rear

I just bought a sure grip 8 3/4 pumpkin to replace my old single legger. While I have the axles out for installation of the pumpkin, I want to change over to the "Green" non adjustable bearings. Someone mentioned to me that I probably should remove the thrust spacer in the pumpkin or the axles may not fully seat. Is this true?

True. Remove the thrust spacer, and be sure to save it in a safe place. You may need it in the future, or would want to sell it. They are somewhat hard to come by.

i never took mine out, and i ave freinds that didnt, and we have yet to have any problems...
but then again, ive met people that left it in there, the nearing failed, athe wheel and axle shot out of the housing, destroying the quarter.
my advice: check the clearance. if theres not any, use the steel shims that napa sells for behind the brake shoes. remember, you only need something like .005 worth of clearance.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I'd better remove it just to be safe. If I unbolt the halves of the unit to remove the thruster spacer, will that mess up any of the calibrated clearances for the gears?

Chris you will have to set the back lash 8 to 12 thou... get you a chry sevice book and it will show you how, it pretty easy.. if you cant find one i can scan mine and post it here for you...lee

Let me add this if you have a power lock like jims dana you can get the pin halfs out with out dissasemble of the posi unit , if you have a cone type posi you will need to take it apart to remove the one peice pin..... the clutch type (power lock) has a two peice pin held together with a small nail like pin and you can drive the little pin out and the two halfs will fall out..

danas came with power lock 8 3/4 41 and 42 cases came with power lock (clutch posi) 8 3/4 89 case came with sure grip (cone type posi)

Jimbo you will need to do your dana 60 as well..........lee

Thanks, Lee. I have access to a service manual in the local library. I'll give it a try.
