I haven't heard anything special about those years. There are many TSB's about transmissions and they incllude many years.
I wouldn't worry as they all have some small issues, IMO. FTR-The trannies did change in 96 from the 94-95 47rh hydralicaly controlled tranny to the 47re electronically controlled tranny in 96. |

trannies
biggest problem i have found is lack of services on transes that are used in severse service applications. there is soot and the lubrication factor breaks down in the trans fluid .soot plugs the filter and other parts overheat and fail.

I agree that lack of service is a huge factor in the life of these trannies. I talked with a gentleman the other day that had is first tranny service at 105k miles. That is way too many IMO. After my rebuild and install of a HiPo convertor I change the fluid every 12k-15k miles. I know it's overkill and the fluid and filter look like new when I dump it, but for the little money it cost compared to another rebuild, I will continue to service the tranny at these intervals.
I have a question, how does soot build up in a tranny? |

If you go to the front wheel drive section you
read all about bad trans in the mini vans. Cumminsram i havn,t heard about soot in the ATF. What area of Michigan do you live in? I,m about 60 miles north Detroit. Have a good one Mac B |

Soot in the tranny??????,,Ok I'm lost on that one,,Of all the trannies I've done, both gassers and diesels included,I've never seen any soot in them,,Without having it here for me to look at I'd say your seeing clutch pak and band material that could be wearing off excessively,,It will look like a grey matter laying in the bottom of the trans pan when its removed,,Its a deal where you have excessive slippage that causes it,,It can come from many different problems, not enough line pressures to allow proper engagement, improper tolerances when assembled, incorrect fluid used or a very loose convertor,,I know you say that you have a "hi-po" convertor but which one??,,There are only a few good diesel convertor makers and a few who claim they know whats best,,Bill K at DTT is one of the best,ATS Trans in Denver,Suncoast in FLA or B&D in Canada are some of the others that are acceptable,,I have seen and done a few installs in trucks with others that I'd not waste my breath on here,,Your truck- your choice ...
Vikingfan-I'd not worry about the tranny, just service it,,Many trucks are out there with high milage on them and as they have told you already most failures are the result of improper service or the use of incorrect fluilds when doing it,,Chrysler ATF +4 or Amsoil are the approved ones,no others are,,Hope this helps some.....BRM |
