Just got a 413.. Anyone wanna help me?
Ok, I just picked up a 1965 chrysler 413 and transmission. Thing is the engine is a 1965 413 crate motor, that was put in a 1964 imperial. Would this be something rare that I should touch, or can I get away with playing with it?. What heads came in it? Also, anyone know any ways to trick the smog guys to make them think this is a 440... so that somehow I can get this thing to pass smog in my 360-powered 77 d-150. Also, can I mate up the tail shaft off my 727 to the tranny. And what type of tranny is it, 904 maybe? It is already lowered and such, but the tranny went out, and I figure it is a good excuse for a big block. I just want a cruser truck.. something that will beat alot of cars on the road.. but is real nice on the freeway. Right now Ihave a 8.25" in the truck, but i plan on puttin the 9.25" out of my power wagon in there.. it is 3.55 posi, insted of 3.23 open. Then run some American Racing 17" torque thrust rims, 17x8 front, 17x9.5 rear.. So what should I do.. i would really like this big block, but could I get some info on it.. I looked around for some.. but didnt know where to look too much.. I know my share on small blocks, and such, just about finished building my 77 power wago from the frame up... Just not too much about the RB 413... any help?? Thanks. Garrett

some of the 413's were Hemi's wern't they? I'd swear i've seen some 413 Boat motors that were.. Anyway, if you've got a hemi 413 good luck trying to make it look like a 440
and making it pass smog, do a high compress (9.5:1) with a mild cam, and not too much carb (600-800cfm should do you fine) and you'd have a nice performing motor. .sbuc72 |

There's nothing special about a '65 413, do with it as you like. It's pretty unlikely it will serve as a smog legal replacement for a '77, too much compression and a lack of external smog equipment.
Any Torqueflight that will bolt to a big block has to be a 727, and the '64 cable operated tailhousing is completely different than the '66 and later, they won't interchange. |

i have a 63 413 in my car. came with 340hp stock before i had it rebuilt, all the 440 parts will fit on it accept the pistons. need a 727b trans.look behind the dist.theres a flat pad that should have a letter and a number that will tell what code the motor is.if you keep it get rid of the intake and the waterpump housing they weigh a lot. 413w 413mw 426mw 426h.
good luck |

intake weigh alot? it weighs less than the perfermer on my 360. I was thinking of putting on all the smog equiptment off of a 400 or 440 of the 77 era. ANyone know if the cali smog guys will bug me about puttin in the optional motor... or will they not let me fly because of the VIN tag? No it isnt a hemi. But where can I find the specs on the heads.. I can get the #'s off of them when I get home.
I was only worried about messing with it because it is a 1965 mopar crate motor.. right down to the mopar crate motor tag on it. Pretty cool. I doubt there are many of those out there.. the orignal blcok cracked at the motor mount. Oh, and should I do something about that, since I ahve seen alot of these 413's crack at the motor mount. I really dont want that happening to me. And does anyone know anyone wanting to trade the cabe shift tranny for a 75-78 dodge 440 727b?. I also have heard about an adapter plate that will allow me to use a 727a behind a 727b. ANyone know about that? thanks again for the help. Garrett |

There is an adapter available to mate the small block trans to the big block but it cost nearly $500. For that you can get a big block trans and have it overhauled.

geeze, that much.. ok.. i priced out an overhaul.. it was $219 for the rebuild kit, and $185 for the TC.. that is for all B+M stuff. Looks ok to me... but we'll have to see.

The heads on that are most likely "516" casting heads. They are a closed chamber design. They can be made to flow very well with mild port work,
The main draw back of them is the 1.60" exhaust valve. Depending on the application, this is no big deal. It still has the same 2.08" intake that the other BB's had. They won't live long with unleaded fuel, no harding in the seats, in the 60's. I like these heads, myself, and have used a set on my 400. The intake from a 400 or 383 won't work. a 413 is a RB engine, 400's and 383, 361 ect are B engines. The B has a lower deck height, and narrower intake, among other things. Visually, the only differnce between that and a 440(with newer valve covers, pcv, manifolds, ect) is the casting number on the side of the block. With 440 manifolds and valve covers, it should pass for a 440. Pass an emmissions test? Depends more on how it is tuned, or if it burns oil, ect. It might. You should be able to find a 727 cheap if you look around. |

cracked by mount
cracks by the motor mount pads? which side? if it is the torque(i.e. drivers side) then just put a chain on it, bolt to the frame and then to the block, limits the movement of the engine when under a load, had to do this when i ripped the side out of a 396 chevy racing with solid motor mounts

cracked block is long gone.. it cracked in 1965... thus the 1965 Mopar crate motor that the delership installed way back in 1965.

Check the casting number on the Heads. If it reads 2402358 you have a sweet set up.... if not, it's just a 413. Also, for 1965 shouldn't the crate engine be a 426, 383 or 440? I'm not a resto guy but could check some books.
