Default Swapping 360 for 400 or 440??

I have a 77 Dodge Charger with a 360 V8 & a Torqueflight 727.

I want to swap the engine for a 400 or a 440?? I know that some Chargers were manufactored with a 400. Will a 440 fit??

What engine model year(s) will I need to use?? Will I need to change or modify transmissions???

Anyone know of a good source for used engines to rebuild in the Pacific NW???

Thanks

Marty

You will have to get (or make) different engine mounts not sure on one of those year Chargers but i do believe they have the slide in style mounts could try a set from a 73 or 74 Charger with a 440 they outta work and as far as transmission you will have to find a BB 727 the one you have now will not bolt up you will have to lengthen the Distributor pickup leads. other than that things shouldnt be much different Id put a Bigger Radiator in it a 3 Core
and if your gonna be doing any thrashing on it at all id replace the Rearend probably has 7 1/4 rear? id upgrade to a 8 3/4 out of a earlier B-body.

Schumacher makes conversion kits to but in a big block. Just like Pink explained you'll need a big block transmission and your suspension will need to be upgraded to take the new load. A better cooling system and rear end is a good idea too. If you are looking for the most bang for your buck you should stick with the 360. They can be built to perform just as good as a big block and you don't have to worry about changing anything. There are several guys on this site with killer 360's and the parts availabilty is excellent.
