Biggrin 4:56 Gears

Just wondering if anyone has installed the 4:56 gears in there "D", i have the R/T so the service manual says 205 mm witch is also an 8.07 or 8" front.. And obviously 9 1/4 rear, I know a few who have Dakota R/T's and swear by the 4.56's, actually gain MPG around town but loss alittle on the freeway
Just wondering who has them installed in a Durango? likes and dislikes please

Thanks Bob

You'll definetly loose some mpg. It'll increase accelerating but also make your truck run at a higher rpm. Try 4.10's.

I have the 3.92's in now and from what i hear 4.10's will not be as noticable and money not well spent. Now the people who i have spoken to with Dakota's who have the same tranny (46re) with the over drive say a 380 rpm across the range..

I got 4.11's in mine and they are perfect. 4.56's would be too much on the highway, way too much!

LDSS , What year Durango do u have? and what gear ratio did u have before the 4:11's ? I have a 2k R/T (AWD) with 3:92's now and weigh in at 5300 lbs with 1/2 tank of gas, this thing is hard to move off the line, but with the mods listed below, after i hit 3000 rpm she goes great, but its from a stand still to that magic 3000 rpm. Also from what i hear for the money going from 3.92's to 4:11 there is not a noticable enough difference for the money spent. And going from 3:92's too 4:56's there is only a 380 RMP gain in gears...

The more I think about it, I say go for it. Unless you are on the highway a lot, shouldn't hurt.

If it ends up being too much gear, you can put taller tires on to offset the gears.

Maybe once every 3 years or so we take a trip out west or down south, but from what i have heard from some of the guys who have Dakotas that put in the 4:56's from the 3:92's wish that it was an option from the dealer, so i figured i weigh in about 2000 lbs more thatn a dakota R/T RC i should really benifit from this mod. LIke i said before the guys who put these in there dakota's say that the RPM's only went up 380 RPM's, this is not to bad. And all say better gas milage around town but worse on highway....

Thumbs up Get them already!

Bob,

I really wish you would go ahead and get those 4.56 gears.

If you would like a little encouragement you can give Marty ( KRC Performance) a call, he suggested that I swap
out my worthless 3.55's for them.

I've spent a little TOO MUCH cash lately on the D and need what's
left over for some economical groceries--Ramen Noodles!

Anyway, I DO spend a lot of time on the highway so your input is what I'll be using to make my decision in a month or so.

Later,
Anthony

BTW, I read you post on the DOC and another site regarding the gear change, Birds-of-a-Feather...

Thanks Anthony, i have the gears on order from Randy's Ring and pinion, the first set they sent me i had to refuse due to the front was not the correct set. Anyway i will post on all the forums as soon as they come in and i get them installed. I was looking for another "D" owner that may have installed these gears and wanted some insite. On the DOC there was a couple of people who have and luv the 4:56's. So i actually can't wait to install them. Oh by the way, i got all my mods from Marty, hell of a guy, had nothing but a great experience dealing with him and he has a lot of very useful information to pass along....
