Goodoleboy,
I've found that a mirror and a small flash light make it a little easier. Unfortunately the grime still needs to be cleared away.
Hope this helps.

Default If it looks grimmy, and....

...the rest of the car looks grimmy, and it has manifolds (instead of headers), and a steel intake, chances are that you may be looking at the car's original engine, and by decoding the VIN # on the dashboard you may be able to find out exactly what it is. This method is usually correct 80%, 4 out of 5 times...

Thumbs up A picture is worth a thousand words.

you might have to do some scraping with a wire brush but it is located under the drivers side head surface on the front of the block.
Well I tried to isert a pic but it didnt work.

measure the distance between the front face of the block and the rear passenger motor mount ear. Post your findings. This is different for a 273/318 and a 340/360

OK, your engine numbers come out of the blender like this:
But first, your numbers should be in a certain order.
There should be two letters(year code, and assebly plant) then three numbers (Cubic inch displacement) then a number or letter(special info) then four numbers(date code) then four numbers (daily production code). so back to your numbers: you are missing the first two letters but rest is 318 cubic inches, the "r" is for regular fuel, 2702 means the engine was built on the 172nd day of 1969, 0108 is the 108th engine built that day.
In 1969 the date codes started with 2530 end ended with 2894 (365 days later).
hope this helps

Unhappy If only I had that engine!

I must give credit to the peson that belongs to that engine, but I cannot remember who it was. It is a member here in Mopar-chat. He posted the pics for bragging rights I guess, so I downloaded them so I can have somthing to go by when I build my 360. The owner must be comended on a great job! If that thing runs as good as it looks................ man, all I can say is whatch out!!
There is a LOT of money tied up in that motor thats for sure!
So, Well done mystery engine builder!
P.S Why is there a Pontiac next to such a marvelous wonder?!
