Default 6-pack .590 cam

Anyone ever use a 6-Pack with a decent size solid cam. Is this why people convert the linkeage to manual? I was toying with the idea of a 6-Pack instead of the traditional single 4, but was wondering if I'm just asking for trouble.

Thanks,

Greg

Hey Greg,
In my opinion the six-pack carb set-up is a real cool set-up, but I'm not sure if it's as efficient as say a modern day 750/850/950 Demon 4 barrel.

The six-pack can be difficult to tune and is a very expensive venture.

I think for raw performance there is some better manifold/carb combo's available out there. Have a look at this months Mopar Muscle, they did a manifold dyno test with a 440, you might get some idea's from that.

However if your building a street machine and money is no object, do the six-pack, the're way cool.

If your thinking about the 590 purple, valve floating, lifter eating cam...think again...save money and go faster with a STX-20 or 21 Racer Brown bump stick...you'll never regret it, I guarantee it.

Ask "atoetly" about his STX.....

You may want read the post titled "Noisey Valve train" before you buy and install your new cam.

Thanks for the heads up on the intake! As for the .590 Puple shaft...I've been running it on the street for 7 years now. I have the crappy Crane Adjustable rockers too. I switched from a Crane .625 roller (because it decided to eat itself) to the .590 and actually love the cam.

Later,

Greg

I love my Barracuda also, but that doesn't mean it's best body style ever made for racing.....and if I really wanted to go faster I would drive it backwards...much more areodynamic that direction

I'm sure that Purple stick is fine for your application, I just wouldn't want to run it up to 65-6800 every time you turn the key like we do.

Note...beware of the marketing ploys that promote roller cams....the're not all there cracked up to be...I'll put a solid up against a equal numbered roller anyday, and as you found out the're not bullit proof.

In a old Mopar Muscle, they ran a s/b intake comparo. It was a preety good thing to do. It really helps the people when they do these things.
The 6pak came in real well. But Like cuda66273 said, in will run you some $$$$$.
The RPM did the best all around. I don't remember what they ran on the 4bbl intakes, but a new modern carb is hard to beat. I think it was the Demon. Not sure.
For sheer cool and WOW factor...6 pak it.
For money savings and a edge over the 6pak....RPM it.

I noticed the mag did all Edel. intakes except the Holley strip Dom.
I would like to see the Stealth run against the RPM.

My 318 picked up 2 tenths when I installed the new AirGap manifold...really needed it bad.

Don't think I could recommend it for street application.

Thanks guys! I have to agree with you on that roller cam thing. Big time money, lots of additional parts (Bronze Distributor gear, mega Spring pressure, etc...) and it ran like crap. I swapped to the solid and was back on the road. Here is a picture of the Roller Cam Specs:

so you have been running the 590. on the street for seven years?
what kind of set up do you have? ive been thinking about it but alot of people have told me its mostly a strip not a street cam.
ive heard that those cams require high compression. what do you think would be a good compression for that cam your answers will either make me buy it or go with a smaller cam thanx.

I guess I'll have to give you my version of "Street." I don't drive the car to work. However, I check the valve lash before a night out (crusie spot or race track) and then go have fun! The car has a lot of compression with it's 915 heads and pop up pistons (P3690834 <--MP#, I have TRW's) so I've never had any concern there. It has a cool sounding idle (800 to 1000rpm), pulls reallllllly hard, has been maintenance free for a long time, and is cheap. I run the MP springs P2806077 and a 1.5 Crane rocker. Like I said, no issues! It pulls a lot harder than that roller in the link above. I raced a friend with a 440 4speed '70 cuda who was running the smaller .557 purple shaft(906 heads) and smoked him.

If you're looking to squeeze every last HP out of your set up I'd probably look else where. If you're like me; a average guy that wanted to do a cam swap on the weekend and enjoy the result....

Hope that this helps,

Greg

One quick note on the idle speed...solid lifter cams should be idled at no less than 1,000 RPM preferrably 1200.....the only oiling they really get is of the crank splash so RPM is important.

Before you buy a Purple stick why don't you give Jim Doyle a call at Racer Brown....you'll learn more about cams in a 5 minute call than I could tell you in 2 hours of typing.

Tell him Don and Allen from Oregon sent you...you'll be surpised what you learn.

I'm running a Comp Cams 590/600 lift, soild cam in a 67 440, 915 head, stock valves, 10.5 to 1, with a Six Pack in a 70 Swinger 4 gear, and I'm really happy with the way it runs. I do drive it on the street on a limited basis, and have not been to the track yet. It has good throtle response. The Six Pack is vac operated and works well.
