And the point would be?

Any 10 year-old Saturn with 400k on the odometer and a little water under the tires can do the same thing.

The point is that allot of us that have been on this board long enough to know what's going on here. Many have followed the build up of this particular 318 and have an interest in seeing how it's performing and what the thing looks like in it's present state.

Allot of different components and theories have been tested and the car has gone a little quicker at times and sometimes a little slower.

I doubt your Saturn, new or ten years old with Astroglide smeared under the tires could spin a pair of 10 x 29 Goodyear's to 5,000 RPM in high gear, then launch with the front tires up and run Low 12.30's at over 108 MPH.

You may not appreciate the technology, effort and determination that has gone into this project but many a Mopar enthusiast here doesÂ…so, how's your project coming along

Default worlds fastest 318???

not to leak in your wheaties Cuda but I thought you were in the elevens. there is a 66 dart I've seen at Firebird raceway with the edelbrock performer RPM package( yes on a 318 and yes all motor) that runs mid -high elevens. sorry cuda but I guess that
means your not the fastest 318 anymore. Now what I want to know is are you going to take this or can we expect to see you
running mid -low elevens anytime soon?

Valiantone:
Thanks for ruining my day Ole Buddy.....is this guy running steel heads?
Be interesting to know as I've been contemplating adding a set to the 318 package.

LarsD:
Ya I know but I just felt like a little venting, caught me at a bad time...been trying to load some new fonts in my Corel Program and it's been eatin' me up all day.

megajoltman:

The drive line is a very critical part of the whole package. Denny's Driveline, 727, Dynamic Convertor, Dana 60/4.56, Mark Williams spool, Summers Bros Gun Drilled axles strapped together with a set of SS 3000# springs.

I just didn't want to have any weak links.

It's actually a real mild burn-out the picture was taken just as it shifted into high gear, I try and keep the burn-outs to a minimum and the life of the $440 worth of tires to a maximum.

Awfull lot of trolls on hear lately...the GM, Rice burner, and Phord forums must be getting boring I guess!

One question though. Does it have to be a cowl hood? Breaks my heart it does..just breaks my heart.

Thanks for the support Guy's...the applause goes to the entire crew of Guy's who worked with me all winter on this project, our first Drag car.

PINK71T/A...that's exactly right...we are the smallest motor in the PRO class at our track and by no means the slowest. When I started this project I had a choice...throw a Big Block or 360 Crate Motor at it or create and build something that nobody else has...I prefer the "Different" approach.

I spent years building "Belly Button" Sprint car motors...the same combo's with the same parts and pieces as everyone else.... Yawn...

This project is fun, it taxes your abilities and knowledge it's definitely not a no brainer. Everybody pays attention when the only 318 in a field loaded with Big Blocks pulls up to the line with a 12.36 Dialed on the windshield.

You should see the crowd around the car when we open the hood in the staging lanes, people don't believe their eyes....no juice, steel 273 heads, no turbo, flat tappet cam and we're always the only first generation Barracuda in the field...ugly ..maybe?
Different.... Definitely!

It's a machine that most can appreciate and enjoy, most of the regular Guy's have watched us move from the Sportsman lanes running 16's to 14's and then to Pro running high 13's then high 12's and now low 12's....every week we're faster and quicker.....now in the top ten (of 135 cars) in points..they're really paying attention.

71383Bee:
The Hood......Hey, My wife picked out that hood scoop!....Ya ya I know.....the new fiberglass hood should be here this weekend, one of my Buddy's is working on a Hemi style scoop for it and we should have it pinned on in a week or so.

Biggrin Less IS MORE!!!!!

I am always MUCH more impressed with someone takes "the path less travelled" and builds a 318 or a slant 6.
One year at Bristol some guy spanked the Hensley's Hemi Cuda with a slant 6 car that was maxed out.
That was probably one of the coolest moments ever. It might have been bottle fed, or maybe blown, but it was a slant six and probably had less money invested in it than the hemi car.

Hey Cuda,
Skip anybody that doesn't dig it. Ther's a lot of people that tell I'm crazy or stupid for doing the things that I do with a 318. So! Run what ya brung and whoop the daylights outta them! I always like looking at the things that are done with your 318 to help with my ideas, usually disproving theories before I go and waste money on them. Glad to have you a part of my website and enjoy seeing the Cuda on here. It's your car to run and enjoy however YOU choose, so enjoy it. Later,

Well thanks Guy's...I really just wanted to post what I thought was an excellent photo taken by a fellow Moparian (73 Charger 440) for all to enjoy.

I appreciate all the support and it's good to hear that there's a bunch of you Guy's out there that do appreciate...."The road less travelled"

Valiantone: I've been working the numbers very carefully on the Edelbrock heads...I'm looking at the runner volume, size, combustion chambers and max whack I can take off them to bring my compression up...it won't be long.

I need to get a set of Oliver rods before I go too far, the 36 year old original 273 rods are the weak link in the engine and before I build anymore HP I need to get them replaced.

I think I've got the combo of cam, heads, valve size, compression ratio and rods figured out...just need to find a day to do the final calculations on the desk top dyno and run some comparitive examples with my Buddy in Texas.

The rough calc's could easily move the car into the low 11's, but because of the limits of the chassis we'll hold it down to the 11.80's until we bite the bullet and back half 'n 4 link it.

This week we added HD Gas filled Drag Shocks on the rear, reset the front shocks from 50/50 to 90/10 where we thought they were...now maybe we can get it to hook.

I looked in National Dragster for "Bunkster" and his Saturn in the list of Division Winners .... funny ... didn't see his name beside mine or anyone elses???? Wonder where he races that thing...must be a IHRA track somewhere.

BTW..does anyone know of an Iron headed 318 that runs quicker than us?

The Aluminum headed guy's will hear us coming soon enough....

Default Some fast 318's...

Cuda:

What is he thinking about the Saturn comment? Sounds like someone who has never been to a drag strip before...

Anyway... as far as fast 318's go, My 3400 pound Dart Sport went 12.87 on Street tires with a 12.5:1 .40 over 318 with stock (untouched) "J" heads, 4500 stall, and 3.91 gears. I hope this drivetrain combo will run mid to low 12's with adjustable valve train and an MSD and some other mods (a new 3800 stall and 4.30 gears are staged to go in as well) in my new Duster. The cool thing is that I bought my 318 short block brand new rebuilt with Aries pistions for a paltry $300!!

Another fast 318 is a friend of mine super stocker 80 Dodge truck. He set a DT/SA (not sure) record at 12.35 with a 360, and I believe he ran 12.50's in the 318 stock class prepared truck. And this is over 4000 pounds!!

Anyway, your car is great (definately not ugly) and you are a great contributor to this board, so don't pay any attention to any Satrun putz's. A fast 318 (even if it may not be the fastest) is something to be proud of anyway!!

Default Bdifferent

Well I don't have a 318, but I am working on a C-Body Drag car ('66 Sport Fury). And if the search for parts is any indication, that is fairly different.

Cuda keep up the hunt for speed, I for one am rooting for ya.

Did I mention that we still run the original 273 heads on this project?
Can you imagine what a decent set of heads would do for us....

There coming soon to a Drag Strip near you....that 12.33 best will be falling soon.

Were you, or anyone else that's commented in this thread, subjected to a reading comprehension exam, the score would certainly have Mom putting you to bed sans your dinner.

Please advise where in the world you ever garnered the notion that I have an affinity for Honda, Saturn or anything else for that matter?

Best Regards

What do we have here? Looks like the Bunkster cannot take a little bit of teasing. You certainly earned it with your errant comment regarding Cudas' picture. You can comment on my comprehension all you want, but that changes nothing. My remark about you getting back to the honda board was a metaphor. It was meant to demonstrate my belief that you have no place here and obviousely are not into cars at all. No sane person would even attempt to belittle a real car that runs low twelves at the track by comparing it to a saturn!

How about your profile, pickle boy? Why don't you list any cars?
Looks like you signed on here just to stir people up a bit. I must admit, you stirred me up some. In the end, the members of this board will be the winners because you will barely be a memory.

My poor comprehension and I will be here if you need anything.
