Question Whats the better Mopar Performance Cam?

Anybody have any input on which Mopar Performance Cam would be the better one for my application.? I have a 1974 Dodge Adventurer Sport 4X4 with a 1969 440 and A-727TF.

I am currently getting a new/old pair of 906 casting heads rebuilt
as the heads on the truck do not have the hardened seats and I
have run unleaded to long.

Anyway I figure since I will have the engine torn down I might as
well swap out the Crane Fireball cam as it is not a good cam for a
heavy truck. The firebal cam is an old one prior to them using the
series versions. I believe it has a 435 lift 294 duration something
like that but it is not freindly to an automatic. When I had it in the
car with a stick it was fine but idles rough at 1000 rpm.

If it matters here are some of the details on the motor:

11.1 to 1 forged pistons
Double true roller timing gears w/ 4 degrees advance
Crane fireball cam/matched lifters/push rods (this will change)
Stock 906 heads (this will change w/906 heads hardened seats)
Edelbrock performer intake
Thermoquad carb (has the larger primarys)
3000 stall Torque convertor (want to go back to stock)
3.92 gears
I hope I have covered all the items that may influence the options

The truck is an all around use vehicle, not serious off road but a little. Mostly on road hauling dirt bikes around.

I currently am looking at the Mopar performance cams # P4286675, P4529270, and P42486777.
Anybody use any of these ? How do they work ?

All ideas greatly appreciated.

Default Engine details matter. More the merry. Better than not enuff.

I cannot get to the catolg to find out the cam specs. The best way to chose a cam for a "driver" is to chose it via the RPM range you drive in. If useing the truck on the hwy @ speeds around 60 mph, your engine RPM is deterimined by your rear ratio + tire height. At this RPM, the cam you slide in should be in it's power band or at most, begining it's power band.
At 11-1 comp ratio, the larger cams can work due to bleeding of cyl. pressure. 11-1 is very hi for the street making a big cam neccery. That 294 duration cam is large for a heavy truck and the 3.92 gears. The thing thats holding back it all is the stock heads. There is a big bottle neck there on power with stock heads and that large cam. The Performer intake isn't a help ethier.
Since you want to go back to a stock converter, try the (HP) Road Runner cam. The split duration unit. That should fit the present combo (minus torque converter) very well.
Use a thicker head gasket to lower compresion or a head shim. They have them for small blocks. Not sure about big blocks. It'll drop your comp about a point or so.
This will bring a balance back into the engine and it's parts.

Many of the posts here regarding MP cams are very negative, especially regarding durability. Try talking with cuda66273 and ALoetl. I wouldn't purchase one. You might also do a search on the board for info about them.

Default they work for me

I have used mopar cam since 1981 and have never had a durability problem. Used a 484 lift cam for several years upgraded to a 557 solid lifter cam, then put the 484 cam in wife's car for several more years. Updated to a 590 cam in 1985 with W2 heads, put the 557 cam in wifes car...LOL... 590 cam lasted until 1998 went the a rod broke and broke the cam also.

I am currently using the old 557 cam that was in wifes car now.

Sold the 484 with lifters years ago to friend...So here is a positive post about mopar cams...

See??? Just as I said. Put in an MP cam - break a rod!! It's always something - flat tires, peeling paint, dirty oil - it's inescapable!!!
