518 (727) Transmission fluid capacity
I have a 90 pickup with the 518 overdrive automatic transmission ( a 727 with a bolt on overdrive unit). My question is what is the fluid capacity for this sucker.
The factory handbook (the small one that goes in the glovebox) says 4-8 quarts My haynes manual says 4-8 quarts and the 1990 Factory service manual says 8.4 quarts Am I to assume 4 quarts for just a pan filter change and 8.4 for complete dry transmission. This seems kind of low??? 4 quarts for a pan change?? |

The 518 has a deeper pan than the old 727. I would guess more like 10+ quarts for a completely empty trans and cooler(s).
A pan only drain should take 5-6 quarts. Always use the dipstick as the final word. |
