My failed 8 3/4 experiment
Well -
Built 8 3/4 for my pro street truck. - 489 case - new green bearings - new complete kit - new strange ring & pinion 4.10 - new HD yoke for 1350 with Moroso straps - new dutchman alloy axles - traded cone style trac-lok for 4 pin power-lok - new clutches for power-lok...... But what about those nasty and always worn out internals (side gears / spiders).... I have tried every trick i know - no one makes an internal kit for that anymore (and haven;t for the past 10 or so years). I even tried a Dana 44 30 spline kit - not available - likely because I suspect they are the same internals... - Hence my - current dilemia and potential for other to learn... As I have know for sometime but never paid much attention to the power-loks are Dino's (in terms of parts availability) and are wearing out at an accellerated rate. I have 525 HP + NOS 150-250 at the crankshaft... I know before you start I should have built a DANA... I think My only choices at this point are to... A. wait for Randy's ring and pinion to finally start making a replacement internal kit... 2-4 months b. put a cone style in (new auburn) watch my money burn up. c. Put a detroit locker - good tuff and very noisy for the street... d. give up and take the loss on what I have done so far and get a Dana and start over another $1500 later. e. Any suggestions from you experts??? |

Surprised the rear gave up. But that is alotta HP. Sell what ya got and dump it into the Dana. Take it easy till then.

Now I wouldn't ever do this, but.....
Go over to Randy's and get a used Auburn or Locker, stick it in, stick it in Ebay and stick it in someone else's car. You should have started with a Da ....nope I'm not gonna say it...... |

Would spool it but... I like to drive my cars, they are not trailer queens. Not that I have anything against them... hahaha..
Your Right... I know Dana... Well - I am going to put a locker in it for now and grab a dana outof a truck and got to work on it... When it's done I will swap it out and sell the 8 3/4 for enough money to feed a starving country for at least a year... Woodburn (maybe tonight)??? Have to check schedule for Friday niht Fights... I'm getting hungry... Better eat. |

tooomuch2, I run a spool (strange ,35 spline) in my 73 roadrunner and I drive mine on the street when I can afford the gas, lol. I was told that as long as you take it easy making corners and keep the tire pressure even on both sides you won't have any problems. I've been driving it like this for 3 years this year and you would never know it was back there. I hope this helps you out with your decision. later shawn

though dana's can be broken and expensive to fix.maybe you should call DTS or Currie and see what they have to say.

After breaking two 8 3/4's I put a Dana in 20 years ago and haven't touched it except for it's yearly fluid change.Trac Lok equipped too.
