Don't tightnen the muffler belt!

You will damage the muffler bearings, as the load on them is very critical to performance.

Nothing worse than spining a muffler brg when out cruising.

Here is your source for all of those hard to find parts like "Cross Drilled Break lines" and your "Muffler Bearings."

Hope this helps (ha ha),

Tightening the muffler belt is only a temporary improvement. It will eventually cost you alot, when you have to replace the muffler bearings.

Although it is a little pricey, High performance synthetic blinker fluid will give you great results, without damaging anything.

Is your belt broken in? The muffler needs at least 150,000 miles to break in the belt properly. If the muffler doesn't have at least 150K on it then tightening the belt won't help. A better bet for improving performance would be to block off the end of the tailpipe with a pipe cap that has a 1/8" diameter hole drilled in it; this increases backpressure and your power will increase greatly because of the improved pressure. Also this will make the engine very quiet.

Overtightening your muffler belt can cause the muffler to swell up and eventually explode. Just think of it like holding a big gaseous fart in too long.

You can also damage the kinooten valve and headlight injectors too.

Rumble fish is right.

Every post here is equally worthless.

No such thing as a muffler belt. If you really want to work on your car, buy a book. Maybe an old chilton manual, then read it front to back.

If you think I'm full of crap, and there is a muffler belt, I've been a licensed Auto tech for 10 years, and operate my own shop.

Just trying to help.

Yes, whoever told you there is a muffler belt is just having some fun... now it's your turn to go back to them and have some fun. Tell them that you actually DID find a muffler belt and thank them profusely for the tip; it improved your acceleration greatly! Be very serious about it and your "friend" will not know what to think

This reminds me of the time that my buddy's girlfriend complained to us that her '72 VW Bug wasn't running right; we looked it over and couldn't find anything wrong, so we told her that the problem was that the car was low on radiator fluid We told her we didn't have any on hand, and that she should go to a repair shop and get them to fill up her radiator

goose: thats not as bad as my brother's friends did.

one was about a 300lb guy as well as a football player, and the others were also strong football players.

they would get a VW bug, or a Geo Metro, pick it up, and take it up 2 or 3 flights of stairs and put it in a big opening where everyone sits in the dorm (on the individual floor).

one guy got so mad he drove his bug out of the school, only to screw up his front allignment, lose his back bumper, and get a wreckless driving ticket, and a ticket for public safety or sumthin.

i guess it's illegal to drive your car in a school....

No muffler belt? I'm crushed. I guess that means the Muffler Electronic Oil Injection Kit won't help?

I replaced the muffler belt with a double link chain and it seems to be better. Degreeing it in was a pain!.

72RR, sounds like stuff we used to love doing in school Another friend of mine had a sister with a bug and whenever we were over at his house we'd pick up the front end of the thing and pull it around so that she was wedged into her parking spot and couldn't move... she hates us to this day! Your story reminds me of a friend who once pulled apart a guy's bug and re-assembled it in his living room, wish I'd been there to see it happen. All these stories make me want to never own a bug!!

Actually I do own one but the only reason I bought it was to make a drag car via an engine and transaxle swap

Back in school a guy had his car in one day and didn't think he had anything to do on it. The teacher asked if he changed the air in the tires to spring air, because if he hasen't done so he could have problems. A while later I go back there and see him with a couple flat tires because he was in the process of doing that! So I told the teacher and he goes back there and started laughing and said it was a joke and compared it to buying a can of polka-dot paint. The guy was all upset he fell for it, and someone else who was helping him very seriously said "you can't just get polka dot paint anywhere, you have to goto a special paint store to get it". We were doing all we could to not fall down laughing.

I cant resist, just remember to use you're metric adjustable wrench when tightening your muffler belt/bearings, or you'll round the nuts off.

FCser, The Dodge Garage is a really good place to get tips about your car, especially if it's a turbo model. Follow the link in one of the previous posts... also one of the best and cheapest mods you can do is to replace your stock muffler with a low-restriction aftermarket unit. This ought to cost about $40 (if you install the muffler yourself) and should give a noticeable increase in power especially at the higher RPM's. Even a stock muffler meant for a turbocharged car would be an improvement, if your car is not a turbo model. An open element air cleaner will help too and ought to be fairly inexpensive. After that prices start to go up. A catback exhaust system (replaces everything after the catalytic converter) is better than a simple muffler swap but is going to cost more too.

'72RR, if I remember right my friend said that the owner of the bug was gone for the weekend so he had that much time to do the job. I'm pretty sure he must have had some other guys there helping out!

Did you hear the one about the chick who goes into a auto parts store and says to the parts guy that she needs a 710 cap. The parts guy says he's never heard of a 710 cap and asks her if she is sure that is what she needs. The girl says yes I'm sure that's what I need....a 710 cap......it's been there for ever and now it's missing. He asks the girl to draw what it looks like on a piece of paper. So she proceeds to draw a circle about 3 inches round and writes 710 in the middle. As she writes it he see's what she needs and starts laughing.......OIL cap.
