Usually one of two things will cause a back fire through the carb. 1) timing 2) sticky valve. You stated you were having trouble adjusting the carbs, if I remember right, you knew to adjust the front carb, then put the rear carb on the front and adjust it.

Adjust what on outboard carbs? Only center carb has air/fuel mixture screws.
Thanks

BACKFIRES ARE CAUSED BY SEVERAL THINGS, FIRST DOES IT B.F. WHEN YOU GIVE IT GAS? IF SO ITS TELLING YOU YOUR MIXTURE IS GOING LEAN , WHICH MEANS CHECK YOUR ACCELERATOR PUMPS ACTION. W/ CAR OFF LOOK DOWN CENTER CARB AND MOVE LINKAGE THE SLIGHTEST AMOUNT POSS. DOES IT SQUIRT GAS OUT THE TWO PORTS? IF NOT TO ADJ. OPEN CENTER CARB ALL THE WAY AND ADJ. A.P. LINKAGE( LOCATED ON R.F. CORNER OF CARB) SO THAT YOU CAN SLIP A .015 FEELER GAUGE BETWEEN THE ROCKER TYPE ARM AND HEAD OF THE SPRING LOADED BOLT. IF IT STILL DOESNT SQIURT YOU WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THE A.P. DIAPHRAM ,YOUL HAVE TO PULL CARB TURN IT OVER REMOVE SMALL COVER WITH 4 SCREWS AND REPLACE, SIMPLE . IF A.P. CHECKS OK AND CARB IS HARD TO ADJ. CHECK PLUGS THEY MAY BE CARBON FOULED (DARK BLACK) THAT INDICATES ITS RUNNIG TOO RICH. IF SO REPLACE POWER VALVE ESPECIALLY IF CARBS HAVE BEEN SITTNG VERY LONG. HOPE THAT HELPS, BUY A HOLLEY BOOK YOULL BE AN INSTANT CARB GENIUS!!!...PRO..

Its unclear to me what your problem is. Is it backfiring while it idles or at acceleration off idle.

Thanks guys, but I got that one fixed. During the initial adjustments after installing cam, 6 pack set (6 pack setup is new) and other goodies it simply fouled out a new set of champions in 1 hour in the garage. During adjustments fumes with garage open could kill.
