'73 Scamp Buildup ?'s
Can I get some opinions on what to change in my car buildup? The current combination is: 383 w/727, 2300 rpm stall conv., and 8 1/4" 3.23 rear. The 383 has 906 heads, el cheapo b-body headers (yes, they fit), 750 Holley vacuum sec., stock Magnum cam, forged pistons, 9.5:1 compression, and Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. It has not been run yet, I just got it back from the machine shop. I know the 8 1/4" rear is a weak point, I'm working on a 9 1/4" from a local guy, and a friend could narrow it for cheap. Is the cam too small? I don't want to be real wild, but I'm thinking I could've gone with something more like 280 adv. dur. and .475-.480 lift. Thanks for any advice guys, and gals even.

Try a look at this place for there cams. http://hughesengines.com/www/hughesengines/ or http://www.compcams.com/ That duration is what I was thinking before I read it. I believe a split duration will really help you out here. A change in rear ratio w/ tire size would help the new found power.
When your headers finally wear out, a step up to http://www.ttiexhaust.com/ would really help. There very nice. A bit expensive. |

4:10s if you dont do much highway driving. That will make a big differance, you need to do it anyway. I say start there.

Wait just a minute here! You have a big block in scamp? Only 1 reason I can think of to do that. Better go 4:56!

Ok, I agree, 3.23's have to go. I have been searching for an A-body 8 3/4" for some time now, with no luck on anything reasonably priced. Actually I know a guy who crushes cars at a yard, and he told me they crushed a big-block Dart a few weeks ago. He even knew I was looking for parts!
You're right 70Barrucuda, this is NOT a highway cruiser. I plan on turning it into an undercover rice-eatin' Plymouth. Since nobody knows anything about Chrysler products, I figure I can get away with 318 decals on the fenders, and a 318 pie plate air cleaner cover, maybe even custom 318 license plates. It's not a lie, it came with a 318 originally. |

On the cam, I think I will go with one of the CompCams Xtreme Energy line. 274/286 intake/exhaust dur., and .488/.491 intake/exhaust lift. I'm going to have to take off the 14x7 Ralley wheels and put on the wide ones now.

I'm not sure about a BB Scamp. I'm trying to work out the details to drop a Hemi in mine. Any pics of your Scamp??

Sorry no pics Ausydad. I can tell you that with my 383 and HP manifolds, there was about 3/4" of airspace left inside the fenderwell on the passenger side. As for the driver's side, let's just say power steering isn't an option. An RB would be a little tighter I suspect, and a Hemi would definitely involve some cutting, especially with some big headers.
