Default LeanBurn carb jetting Holley 2280

I converted my 83 Dodge Leanburn 5th Ave. over to MP Electronic Ignition. I still have the original Holley 2280 non-feedback carb on there and it is running ok. Do I have to change my jet size now that I am off the leanburn system? I pulled the carb apart and the jets have 255 stamped on them and when I pull my spark plugs after a run they have kind of a white powdery soot covering them. I think that means that the carb is a bit on the lean side which would make sense. My mileage is good at about 16 mpg in the city and getting rid of the leanburn woke the engine up a bit but I was wondering if it could be better. Any help would be much appreciated.

A tad richer should help as the carbs were jetted lean from the factory. You could get more mileage out of her. It depends on how much you wanna spend on her.
Simple things like an open elemnt on the air cleaner will help. A dual exhaust with an "H" pipe, low restiction mufflers and hi-flow cats if you have to have them will help out. Not to mention, sound cool.

I phoned my local Holley dealer and he had not heard of that number before but said that the jet sizes are in thousands of an inch. I grabbed the micrometer and sure enough it is in fact a 55 thou. hole. He suggested maybe a 58-59 and drive around and pull the plug to see if it is to much. I will try it when I get sometime this weekend. What should I be looking for as far as too much jet other than fludding, a damp plug?

A rich condition on the plug is dark brown. Smell the exhaust as well. It shouldn't smell bad or like gas. The jet change sounds about right. I change them .002 jumps. Thats will do it most of the time. Going 4 is a lot. It might work jumping that much, it might not.
It should not be a damp plug. (buy comparison to what is in there now when you pull it out.) And it won't flood. You'll know when you have gone to far. (Cough-hack)
