flexplate on early 413
A friend of mine has a '61 413 that he wants to put in a more modern car; he's having trouble finding a flexplate to fit it because the 413 apparently has an 8-hole crank as opposed to 6-hole like most big blocks. He noticed that the 426 Hemi uses an 8-bolt flexplate; will a Hemi flexplate fit on this 413?

Alright this is how I understand the situation, the early engines (1961 and older) with a powerflite trans the converter bolted directly to the crank shaft I don't know if you already knew that
But I hope this can help you Chuck |

Yeah, he'd mentioned that as being the root of the problem (the torque converter uses a different bolt pattern from a flexplate) he was hoping that the Hemi flexplate would bolt onto the stock torque converter location on the 413? Another problem is that the stock 413 torque converter is too big to fit inside the 727 he wants to use behind the engine, so he'd like to mount a flexplate so that he can use a standard torque converter. He'd rather not have to go to the trouble of swapping in a 440 crank just so he can use a flexplate.

hay goose - the 61 and older stuff really is a bummer to mix and match with the newer (62 and up) equipment. 61 used a cast iron torqueflite and in 62 they went to the alum version.

There is no flexplate that will allow a pre '62 413 to mount to a 727.
The early crank flange extends much farther from the back of the block so a spacer would be required between the block and the bellhousing in addition to the flexplate. |

So the only option would be to swap in a 440 crank? Or is the bellhousing mount on the crankcase different so that even if the crank were swapped the bellhousing still wouldn't work w/o an adapter?

413 flex plat
the spacer that was mentioned earlier or almost mentioned. I seem to recall such a spacer used to put an alumanum 727 behind a 392 hemi. it was a very thick spacer about 1" I belive. this may or may not be helpfull. But it might worth a look.
