Default Another broken left motor mount on my 69 Super Bee . .

Just broke another leftside motor mount on my '69 Super Bee. Thats the third one in the last six years.

I use the Mopar brand mounts. Does anyone know of a better brand?

We took a piece of 2" x 1/8th flat bar, put a hook in it and welded the mount and the frame together.

We'll need a 4" grinder to pull the motor but, hey it's a Mopar why would we ever want to pull the motor?

You may want to check with Schumaker in Seattle they have a good selection of performance mounts, they may be able to help you out.

I could use a little back round on this engine. But, 1) Is this a high powered engine? 2) Are you useing a torque strap? 3) Is a soild motor mount out? 4) Is the rubber ripping apart or the metal failing?
These questions (2 & 3 ) are possible answers as well.

i have a cure for broken motor mounts.

CHAIN IT DOWN! i ran a 1/4 chain (diameter of links) from the front of the head to the frame. chain has stretched a little but now i don't put my air cleaner into my hood (it sticks into my hood scoop) and i still have good motor mounts...

a torque strap would do the same thing, but my chain only cost me around $0.85 for a foot...

Default Chain Chain Chain..........

Yeah, chain it down. If you put a short chain between the top half and the bottom half of the mounts it will keep it from over extending when you put your foot in it.

Default ditto on the chain....

In a past life, I ran the chain right around the mount and put a good sized bolt through it. Never worried about it after that.

To answer a few questions; the engine is a 440 thats slightly warmed over, no torque strap just a stock set-up. The rubber of the mount tears apart.

I've thought about fabricating something or using a short section of chain to limit how far the engine lifts when it torques over, but wanted to keep it stock.
The thing is, I also have a '70 Charger (440 SixPack car) with its engine built almost exactly as the 440 in the Super Bee (hemi cam, ported 906 heads, assembly balanced, etc), and it still has its original motor mounts! Never have broken a mount in that car, and I drive it as hard as I do the Super Bee.
And yes I've had the Charger long enough to know that it has the original mounts.

Just hoping to find a tougher mount (rubber) that doesn't pull apart.

like they said before, Schumacher has bullet proof mounts that lock up under load ands you don't have an ugly piece of chain welded to the front of your block... unless you chrome it or something......

I wrapped the chain around the engine mount and the K frame, didn't weld it or bolt it to the block..........unless you looked for it, you really didn't notice it.....

Shumacher makes a great mount and it looks stock. If your going to be holding a performance motor use spherical rod ends with a turnbuckle. it looks much cleaner than the chain and can be adjusted exactly. With a mild 440 the shumachers should work just fine. They have done very well on the runner for 4 years and alot of abuse. The factory cable worked for about a month.

why weld? we used a couple of bolts and a drill to make a hole.... mine is noticeable because its on the front of the head, but it makes cowboys sweat when they see that before we race

Road Chicken, where do you get those spherical rod ends and turnbuckles from? I've seen them before, but I don't know where to find them.

Thanks,
L.C.D.
