Detonation..?? Timing problem?
I have a 440 duster and i noticed a slight detonation the other day so i advanced the timing slightly (fresh rebuilt only 1 weak old). Now the car is hard to get going from a stop..? It kind of stalls for five feet untill it starts running normal. It is also overheating after about 8 minutes...Above 200 degrees. Could i have a timing problem? How can i figure this one out?

You are either too advanced or too retarded. (speaking of your engine of course). Have you checked it with a timing light? It should be easy to figure out.
Normally if you have pinging you need to retard the timing, not advance it. Pinging can also be caused by a lean mixture. Solve the timing and mixture and see if your overheating goes away. |

I had a very simalar problem when I first put my engine together. I had the distrib in and it was at the ruff timing stage. It overheated and ran , at best, OK. I losened the distrib worked on an other thing or 2. I totaly forgot the distrib. Ran the car with it lose and didnt know why the overheating problem got worse.
Soon, and very soon, the engine wouldnt run unless i put the hammer down to the floor. That got me thinking for a few min.'s. Ah-Ha! Timing! Could be for you. Try as suggested, a light. Bet your to far away. |
