No idle on cold rebuilt engine
HI
I have a minor problem with my totaly rebuilt 383 HP engine. When engine cold I have no idle at all!! It startas a dream,,,even if it make some tappet noise (wiew my Q concerning that part!!). BUT it have to go for more than 5 minutes before idle at all!, after that period of time it starts and idle well!! I run the engine without choke as I did last season with my worn out engine, I used a Carter by that time and it was more tricky to start but it idle fine after 1-2 minutes! Now I have a rebuilt original Holley also without chokeassy. I also blocked the heatchannel under intake,,, does it have any effect even if I havent any choke? Ï think I will mount a wire to control the choke,,,,or do you have any tip or idea why it take all that time to make it run by itself, If I lower pedalpressure and go down to 1500 it dies directly when cold, after 5 min it idle fine at 1000!! Thanks and best r Olle |

Blocking the heat channel may be your mistake. It allows heat to get to the base of the carb. quicker so the fuel atomizes better. I had a clogged channel once that actually caused ice to build up around the base of the carb. in winter time in Idaho.

And, yes, definitely hook up the choke!

Lot's of guys block the channel on performance applications. It may be part of ther problem(like bill55az said), but put a manual choke kit on first.
The choke kit is a lot less work to try, and even if the cross over is a factor, you'll get some sort of idle out of it. |
