changing rear ends
hey guys, My 72 challenger is making a high pitched whine comming from the diff. Is there another car that i can use as a doner? I have the 8.75 rear now, what about the 8.25 direct bolt on? Ultimate strength is not an issue for me right now- just want to keep it rollin. thanks, Ben

I would just change out the pumpkin. alot easier to do than a whole rear end swap plus an 8-3/4 to an 8-1/4 is a downgrade. It's probably just the gears in the center section. Now would just be a good time to swap out to higher gears.

I had the same noise that turned out to be wheel bearings. $70 for both axles at CarQuest.
Good luck, Greg |

68Valiant is right about the rear swap. Just do a pumpkin. If thats the problem. Randys ring and pinion has them in stock.
Overall, it's not a bad deal. Buy it, drop it in. gsmopar's wheelbearing idea is worth a look and a lot cheaper. |
