Carb help
Hey,
I've got a few questions for ya'll. Right now on my'77 440, it is all stock. I am planning on changing that, but not all at once. I want to put a new Carb and Intake on it. It has a thermo-quad right now, and I don't want to stay with that. I want to have more low-to-mid range power than anything. Mainly acceleration is what I'm looking for. What would you guys and gals recomend for a carb and intake? thanks a lot Steve |

Performer or other dual plane intake to get your low end, and a 750 to feed the cubes.

What about teh Performer RPM? I thought i read somewhere that it too has low -end torque possibilities? Mabye not. What brand carb would you recomend? Would a 600 cfm be too small? I want good throttle response.

The standard Performer is rated for idle to 5500 RPM's. The RPM is at 1500-6500. It kinda depends on your cam specs as to whicxh RPM range will suite you better. But most will go with the standard for more streetability. This is a decision you will have to make based on your cam and convertor stall speed. I think 600 would be too small for your setup. I would stick with the 750 and get it adjusted properly. Crispness will come with being tuned right for carb and timing. Holley, Carter, or Edelbrock will all do you fine.

The TQ can be a very good carb if set up properly. Demon Sizzler does carb setup for people with very good results. The small primaries should give you the low end you want. The stock intake is not too bad either. I would get a Edelbrock performer RPM if I was changing manifolds though. The big problem with the late 70's big blocks is not the carb and intake but the low compression ratio and very mild cam.

So there would be low-end power with the Performer RPM?
Thanks a lot Steve |

The RPM inatake begins making power @ 1500 rpm's. If your car is heavy and or the axle ratio is numericly low, the car won't like the intake.
Have your T-Q redone by demon sizzler. It's the best all around carb there is. If your going to insist on aanother carb, a 750, like stated will do. It's a full 100 cfm less than the T-Q. No less than a 700 cfm Holley. *Note. I have a old AFB that cam off a 440 in a 68 Imperial. It is the small AFB @ around 630 cfm. This AFB has NO secondary air valve. When you hit the throttle, all 4 barrels are opened. It can work. It will limit top end. |

What is the engine in? Is the engine stock? The Performer RPM manifold is great, I've got one on my 66" Coronet and had one on my old Fury with a built 383 4spd. My Coronet has a hi-stall converter with a built up engine and the Performer RPM works great with the 780 Holley. If your engine is stock, or in a very heavy car/truck you would probably be happier with the regular Performer. What rpm range do you want to use it in? Strictly street driving? You will get better driveability with the Performer. Street racing/Bracket racing? Performer RPM. Performer manifold works from idle-5500rpm. Performer RPM manifold works from 1500-6500rpm. Pick your driving style, then pick your manifold. Good luck, Mopar_Maniac |
