Advance Springs?
Hey guy's i need a question answered i really don't understand.
How do Advance springs in a distributor work? and which ones should i put in my distibutor? Right now i just have stock Springs in my 440 Six-pack motor i was told lighter springs are better. Less tension? Sorry for the Stupid question but i just really don't know! |

Lighter springs give up holding the mech part in tight. When the speed inside the distrib is fast enuff to overcome the sprinds tension, the mech. part inside will move. Thus, advancing the timing.
It brings in the advance early. Some engines like it, some do not. |

In the distributer, you have two half-moon shaped plates. These are the advance weights. These plates move out from the center of the distributer by centrifacal force caused by the distributer spinning. The springs that are attached to these plates are the advance springs. They control the rate at which the plates move out. The heavier the spring, the slower the rate of advance. The lighter the spring, the quiker the rate of advance.
As for what springs to use, it may take some experimentation to see just what your combo likes. Generally speaking, a good baseline to start with would be springs that allow full mechanical advance by 2000 rpm. Hope this helps...........MoJoe |

Inside you will find two springs - one lighter then the other. Take the heavy one completely out leaving only the light one. That should bring total mech. advance in by 2500 rpm. If you have a higher comp. motor and are using less then ideal octane gas, you may find this is too soon - ping, ping! Either buy a recurve kit to get some really light springs and install one where the stock heavy one was, or remove the stock light spring, cut off one coil (to give it more tension) and replace it after "tweaking" the end to match what it used to look like.
With the faster advance, you will definately notice the diff. by seat of pants. Mills |
