Question Tips on buying an automatic Transmission

I have found a 904-A transmission being offered at $125.00

It will already have been pulled from the donor when I go to pick it up.

Do any of you have any suggestions for checking it out before I purchase it?

As always, your input is appriciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Question Mystery Transmission Buy

1st Be sure of your application. Slant Six or mild small block (273-318)for the 904 type only.

2nd Get the Converter that it came with.

3rd SMELL the fluid. If it smells burnt - Pass or buy as a core.

4th Open the pan and look for debris. A Tablespoon full of dirt(clutch facing) is normal. Metal parts no.

5th Get a Guarantee . A 90-Day Exchange or whatever.

6th Change the front pump seal and filter before you put it in. Wouldn't hurt to adjust the bands too. If you don't know how, take it to someone who does.

7th When you are ready to unstall the trans & converter, make sure the converter is fully seated in the trans - spin and push until it seats in. Remember, the flex plate only bolts on one way. A quick way to save some grief is to take it off the motor, line it up on the converter and mark one of the ears and converter with a shot of paint. Reinstall the flex plate and go for it.

8th After the last bolt is tightened and before you start the motor make sure you have at least 4 quarts of fresh ATF in the transmission. While the engine warms up keep checking the fluid in neutral and adding to bring it up to at least 1/2 down from full mark.

Default Thanks Pete

Just what I was looking for , Pete!

BTY- on #2- are you suggesting that the Converter on my current 318 may not fit the transmission I am about to purchase?

Thanks for you advice.

Exclamation Reason for matched Converter

If your existing trans is toast the converter may be contaminated with trash. The converter and the transmission share the fluid supply. It can be flushed out, but, it is hard to get all the nastys out.

Get the converter with the used transmission and you will have one less thing to worry about. BTW, on this same topic, I forgot to mention you should flush or at least blow out the trans cooling lines and cooler itself with shop air. Good luck!

All previous repleis are sound advice. however if you look at your flex plate you will notice a 1/8 th " hole sitting off all by its self. this is for proper alignment with the converter bolts. Usefull only if your converter has a draine plug. If this is the case simply align the drain plug opposite from the 1/8" hole and you will allways be on target.
