318 cam choice
I have a huge problem on my hands. This weekend I'm bringing a motor home for my Satellite. It's a 78 318 with 62k miles on it. I have everything ready to go on it, eldebrock performer intake, 600 holley and a rebuilt 727 with a B&M transpak. I'm leaving the engine basically stock because this engine is just temporary til I find a better block and do a nice rebuild on it. The only thing I want to do is add a cam. I know nothing about cams what so ever, the only guidlines I have is basicaly stock lift, I was told with too high of lift I'll have to replace more of the valvetrain, but I do want a longer duration to give a nice, lopy idle and maybe some extra low end as well. Please respond as soon as possoble I've got to order my cam by tomorrow afternoon to get it in time.

Extra duration and lopey idle = less low end torque. Does the engine not have a cam in it now?

scratch the second scratch
ok, so I don't lnow that much about the effects of different cam grinds, what is most important is a cam that I can drop in place of this old stock one in the motor, I'm mainly looking for a mean sound to bellow out of my dual exhaust.

I really hate to rain on your parade, but I'd leave the stock cam in it until you can afford to do it right. Just putting a high performance cam in with the old stock springs will not help anything. The weak stock valve springs won't allow the motor to turn a high enough rpm to help much of anything.
If you put a cam in with a "lopy idle" sound the car will actually be SLOWER than it is now. You have to think of building the engine as a "package." If you want the engine to sound like it has a big cam in it just create a vaccum leak...just kidding, please don't do that. Don't waste your money on internal parts for a "temporary" engine. If you are going to try and find another small block to build, then go nuts with external parts that can be transfered over to the new engine. I don't want to discourage you, I just hate to see people spend money to go slower. If you want to do that just buy a chebby Later, Mopar_Maniac |

On the cheap, the Mopar #4452759 should work.
The advertised duration is 260/268 with 0.430"/0.450" lift on a 110 Lobe seperation angle. You probbably want to install it at 106 to 108 degrees. I think the cam and lifter kit costs about $150 from jegs or summit. Get a new timming chain with multiple keyways to make it easier to degree in the cam without offset cam keys. |

Cam
I ordered a stock cam for a 340 for mine from Mancini Racing.com.
It works very well on a mostly stock 318. It is inexpensive too!. Also double roller timing set while you are in there anyway!! Seems like alot of work though. Depends how long (temporary is). |
