I have a 1967 Chrysler Newport 4dr with the 270hp 383. The car has 130,000 original, one owner, miles on it. But 270hp in a 4144 lb car is a little on the sluggish side. I've added dual exhaust already for a much better look and sound, but was wondering if adding further parts (intake, 4bbl, etc) would be beneficial or detrimental. What parts can I safely add without detonating the motor. Right now, it runs like a clock, smooth and consistent, with no smoking or leaking. I am mainly just interested in waking it up a bit. The trans has already been rebuilt. Thanks.

I don't see adding a 4bbl setup being detremental to the car at all. What I'd use is a factory 383 4bbl. intake or the Edelbrock performer and the Carter/Edelbrock 625 cfm carb. You'll have to change the air cleaner,so I'd look at getting a factory one from a boneyard,or use one of the K&N deals.I don't know if you'll be doing this later, but a 383 factory Road Runner cam will work great and give you a nice smooth idle, along with more power, and will work with the A/C too.

Thanks Christopher - I would really like to add the 4bbl in the near future for a little more power. The cam will probably have to wait until I really need to rebuild the motor, which may not be for a while (fingers crossed). Would I be ill advised to add a performance cam to a motor with this many miles without rebuilding ?
Thanks for your advice.

Not necessarily.I would upgrade the springs to the 440 replacements(same as 383R.R.)but if you do that, you might as well do a valve job too,and then make your decision on whether or not to just have the guides knurled or put in bronze wall valve guides. You can do the cam without rebuilding the engine, you're going to have the intake off anyway, and if you do a cam swap, change the timing chain and gears too.Put it this way...my 86 Ramcharger has a 318 and it's going to get a 340 replacement cam and a 4bbl setup installed and it just turned over 100K,and I'm not going thru the engine,it runs too smooth!!
