I have a 72' 400 with origional tranny. I have no clue what it is. It is an automatic. Is it possible that it could be a torque flite A 727? Will it work on a 440 6 pack with a shifter on the floor?

Your tranny would be a torqueflite 727. All the B and RB motors (your 400 is a B motor) with autos used the 727. Yours will bolt right up to a 440 without any problem. The 727s used behind the 440 6Pacs were beefed up more (stronger internals & more clutches, same as a hemi trans) but if your tranny is in good shape it should hold up just fine the way it is. One suggestion, run an auxillary cooler. It can't hurt, and might help a lot towards the longevety of your tranny! It's cheap insurance.
