Default Hellfish

The sailor Son's '66 Barracuda fired up tonight on the first crank rotation. Nearly 8 months of time and money put a gigantic smile on the young man's face.

Thanks to all of you who have helped me (us) out on this crazy project that seemed like it would last eternally.

Special thanks go out to: Don Gould, for his kindness and guidance and willingness to help in any way. Ray Ewert, for his expertise in all things electro/mechanical and his professionalism in getting the car past it's final barriers. Al Toetly for his demonstration of determination in the face of adversity, and to Rumblefish for his long term encouragement. There really isn't enough room here to thank all of you who contributed your knowledge, theories, guesses and support. Thank you everyone.

STATS for HELLFISH: 1966 Barracuda - Wilwood disks in front, B-Body 11 " drums in back - late model A-Body 8 3/4 rear end with 3.55 posi gears - Tci StreetFighter 904 and Tci 2400 RPM stall converter - big, that is BIG sway bars front and rear - all PolyGraphite bushings - SS springs (both right side) relocated 3" inboard for tire/wheel clearance - 225/50/15 Toyo Proxis tires on rear - 205/50/15 Toyo Proxis tires on front - all tires mounted on 15X7 American steel Rally wheels - Engine: 340 with all the trick machining - flat top SRP forged pistons with skinny rings, 340 rods and 340 cast crank, all balanced - compression ratio static at 10.5:1 - Crane cam, lifters, and Gold Race roller rockers, Cloyes double roller timing chain (the $100.00 one) - MOPAR Performance fenderwell exit headers with 3 inch pipes and 3 inch short FlowMasters, exiting in front of rear wheelwells - Edelbrock RPM Air Gap manifold and Ed. 600 cfm carb - Edelbrock out-of-the-box aluminum heads - custom curved MP distributor with MSD 6AL box and MSD regular style coil. 3250 pound car with full gas and sailor Son driving it.

Any guesses for 1/4 mile ET and trap speed on street tires and closed exhaust?

There is a twenty dollar bill for whoever guesses within 0.05 seconds of ET, without going over. The car will run at Woodburn next weekend, and the $ are on it's quickest run for the weekend.

Have fun, everybody!!!

cam specs? (advertised duration - duration @ .050 - lift - rocker
ratio - cam lobe seperation - cam overlap)

how is cam installed? (advanced - strait up - retarded) if not strait up, how many degrees adv. or ret??

altitude?

what do you think the weather will be like? (humidity - air temp)

how tall are the rear tires....from the ground to the top-o-the rubber?

open, or closed chamber heads? how much porting? (none - basic/port matched - thorough - generous - massive)

header tube size?

induction type? (supercharger - turbocharger - hood scoop - ram/cowl air - no hood scoop

intake manifold type? (tunnel ram - hi rise single plane - med rise single plane - low rise single plane - dual plane/sports car - stock cast iron smog)

how experienced is sailor son in racing?

how good would you say traction is after burn out?

how many gears is a 904?? dumb question i know, but i have never used one, or been in a vehicle w/one... is it like a 727 or 903? do you know gear ratio's?

using NOS?? if so, how much?

what type of fuel? (nitromethane - alcohol - 110+racing fuel - 100 to 105 racing fuel - super unleaded with octane boost - 93 octane super unleaded - 89 unleaded - 87 unleaded)

Freak 1st - Sailor Son weighs 150 - all-up weight of car wet w/him driving is about 3250.

1972RR - Cam is Crane PowerMax Hydraulic H-278-2 w/1.6 rockers. 114 lobe sep, Dur @0.050: I=222, E=MCsquared, oops, different engine, E=234 - Lift @ 0.050: I=417, E=444 - Installed straight up. Altitude=sea level, expected temp=mid-70s. 25" tires, no burn out. out-of-the-box Ed. Alum heads 63cc chambers, no porting. 1 7/8 MP fenderwell exit headers. Ed. RPM Air-Gap dual plane intake. Cowl induction scoop (Thanks to cuda66273). The Son has been racing for 7 years. 904 is a 3 speed, small T/F, don't remember the ratios. 108 octane race gas w/mech Carter fuel pump. No drugs (no NOS). I expect traction to be a problem, since the car was built to be a canyon runner, not a drag car, and suspension, tires, carb and gears are all wrong for the drags.

Hope this info helps y'all

eh...i guess 13.49 @ 108.9 mph.

with different stall, a good port job, different gears, bigger carb, better traction maybe bigger cam and advance cam, and run uncapped headers he COULD run a possible estimated et of 11.53 @ 112...

I think 11s would also take slicks and some chassis work, don't you?

um, no i think it was open exhaust, bigger gears, and still on 25" radials with EXCELLENT traction... oh, and also better port job, lower fuel octane because of intake, i think i bumped it to med-rise single plane....it wouldn't compute anything with the dual plane... my only options for choosing things are in order from best to last (i think) and posted in my first post...

Let me check my crystal digital video ball.....

I see a Fish blowing the tires off through 2 gears and running a dissappointing 13.80......but wait here comes the 66 Fish Guru....he's talking to the Sailor ...... next pass he feathers the throttle and short shifts the scalely beast into second and eases into the throttle.......ahhh a 12.80 at 108 MPH....now if we can get some slicks under that thing????????

That motor probably makes in the area of 400-450 HP and at 3200#s it will take some traction to get it much quicker.

He needs to make an all out 1000 ft pass so we can do the calcs and be sure he doesn't break into the 12's which will move him over to the PRO lanes with the Big Boys....where the losing reaction times are anything slower than a .540 and .520's are average.....

Can't wait till next weekend...is Dave still gonna be on leave?

Let's line up together in the test and tune and race each other on the first pass. We'll have Dan get a good pic of a head on launch, I'll wind up the limiter and yank the front hides on the launch, that'll give him a good picture to hang up over that Brittney Spears poster on board ship.

Get that car over a scale and let's get the front to rear %'s....make sure the Gas Hole is full and be sure he either puts some octane boost in it or better yet I'll sell him 5 gallons of 110 for $20.00 to mix with 10 gallons of super no lead no power Texaco.

I'm excited, my panties are all bound up

I see a 13.51@101.4 with severe traction problems,if you launch at part throttle, mash it down after it is done spinning,I see 13.04@102.4

it depends on how you drive...in addition to temp.,humidity, air quality, and the track,to give a half second bracket is difficult to start with, but to get within .05 WITHOUT knowing how the driver drives is IMPOSSIBLE...of course a person COULD make a lucky guess...

BUT since you said the $ is for the best run,I will go with 13.04,and HOPE that he realizes his traction problem BEFORE the air is runied

BTW-anybody here race at Brainard in northern MN?

well, when your're 16, have a gas/NOS hog, have a heavy foot, love to go cruisin, and DON'T have a job....$20.00 is plenty! (bout half - 3/4 tank full with octane boost...enuff to go cruisin a couple of nights )

The sailor Son took the HELLFISH to Seattle to visit his Mom - ate a lifter and with no time to fix it, had to fly back to his bas. Sorry, guys, but I'll keep this thread and pay the winner when he runs it. He'll be back in August.

Well... The Sailor Son decided to go racing with the Hellfish, when he gets back from his current deployment. Don Gould is ripping the car apart from its' street configuration. Looking to be a 10 flat car (340) when the Boy gets home, late in the year.

Thanks for asking.

Good to see you post Doug Comin to Mission with Don? Lordy its gonna be hot! Wonder what a 52 yo bald guy tipping in at about 250-260 with a beard on his back would look like in speedos?
