Default 8.75 differential

im trying to figure out if this 983 casting differential is a 742 type, or if its a 741 type. does anyone know?

If the last 3 digits say 742 then you got a 742. If they say 741 then you got a 741. The number are on the left (drivers) side and are near the front pinion. They are about a 1/4" tall. Sometimes a lot of gunk gets on them and they are hard to read.

Are you sure it isn't 985?
1634985 is the casting number for the 1 3/4" stem housing prior to the early sixties, it was replaced by the 742.
Reportedly, the 985 was cast steel and was replaced by the cheaper to produce cast iron 742.

You can have them drilled by a machine shop - bad idea, 'cause it weakens them a lot, or you can buy new axles for between 200 and 700 for the pair.
