A 78 440 is a slouch!! its only rated at 280 hp,but its a good foundation, its only real limit is the cast crank but thats good to 550hp, and with a few mods will be pretty good,it already has 452 heads. I have a 78 3/4t 4wd w/440 and honestly the 360hp in 78 made more power, add headers, mild cam and a decent carb and youll p/u a good 75 hp, add a good aftermarket intake and gain another 10 or so.What it really needs though is more compression, its at 8.2:1 stock, mill the heads .030 and you'll get another .5 or so,you can approach the 375hp rating the HP motors had in 67-71. I have big valve 452 heads and a 484/284 MP cam and 9.8:1 comp w/the 4.10 gears it flies for being a portly 5400 lbs.As far as I know the only BB wedge to come w/chrome v/c's was the 67 GTX,I'm confident theyre not stock. But at $250 if it has good compression..jump on it...PRO...
