318 build-up has some track time.
Here is what I put together with some suggestions from this board.
1971 Dart , original 6 cylinder car, gone with the 6 and in with the 1976 - 318 with 50,000 miles from junkyard. Junkyard transmission with 6 cylinder convertor. I put the kill your compression 360 heads on it with 2.02 & 1.60 valves. I think they were the 915 or 587 castings. I ported and polished the heads myself. Gasket matched the intake as well. Intake is a Performer. Plan on removing alot of material to match the heads if you use a performer. An Edelbrock 750cfm carb. I didn't have anything smaller. Hooker headers with 2 1/4 dual exhaust with turbo mufflers. General Kinetics 268 hydraulic camshaft. Lift is 454 on both and I think the duration at .050 is 216 or 218. Electronic ignition with light weight springs. Stock 7 1/4 rear axle with 2.76 gears. I know this is not the best combination of parts , but it does work pretty good for what it is. This was a budget project and I picked up parts cheap. Here are my ET'S: 1) 16.17 at 89.15MPH- Car bogged from 1st to 2nd 2) 15.62 at 92.79MPH- Removed air cleaner 3) 15.85 at 91.78MPH- Transmission failure, No 1st,drive or reverse after the run. So I had to drive home in 2nd gear. My next issue will be with getting the transmission straightend out and to put an 8 3/4 with 3.91 or 4.30 gears. I think the Ol' girl might have some 13's in her! |

Sounds like you broke the rear band in the transmission.
The gears should really help. Good luck with the project. |

From one 318'er to another.....
GOOD GOING! More gear and you'll be pushing the 13 second mark hard. Nice looking car! |

Hey nice car, ill be running a similar set up only ill have a thermoquad carb, a bigger cam and from what everyones been telling me i should go for some 302 swirl port heads. I am surprised your rearend held up... Ive always thought 7 1/4s rearends were notoriously weak. Guess not. But anyways ill let you guys know what my shit runs once its all together in a few months.

Yeah , the 7 1/4 rearends are pretty week. THey will hold up for a while as long as you don't get too much traction. I think I'm pushing mine to the limits. I figure if I break it, that is a good reason to put in the 8 3/4. I did break a rearend in a 77 chrysler Le Baron. Stripped all the spider gears right off. I think pulling out of school every day sideways didn't help it none, hahaha!

Yeah thats what im planning on doing too, my 7 1/4 is a one legger and my tires are pretty small so it feels geared pretty low so I know I wont be able to hook up that well. But a 4.11 sure grip 8 3/4 would be nice.
