Bracket Problems
Well, Cageman, I had the same question several months ago, and Sanborn made me a pattern of his. I had one made. It wasn't cheap, but it works like a charm.
The reason you didn't find one, is that they don't mass produce one commercially. I can copy my pattern and send you what Sanborn sent me if you wish. Just let me know. Hope this helps, and.......................See ya at the track!! |

Yeah that would be great, You are a lifesaver, oh the time I'll save making my own pattern and converting it to the computer and cutting it out. How thick is the aluminum that you used for the bracket and where will it mount to on the block, head or timing cover, just curious.

Good Morning! The bracket is made of 1/4" aluminum and was fabricated using the latest in technology-HPSS(I will be glad to send the program). It mounts between the water pump and timing cover. I did add a 1/4" aluminum brace behind the mount to prevent flex.

Forgot to add:
HPSS-Hand Powered Sabre Saw We also use such Hi Tech devices as SAMM(Swing Arm Milling Machine-Grinder) and BFW(Blue Flame Wrench-Cutting Torch). Then there's the old favorite-Hammer, Bigger Hammer and the ultimate; 3 pound Sledge Hammer. |

I have a buddy with a water jet that uses water to cut through anything, and I thought it would have to be made out of 1/2 inch aluminum, I can handle 1/4 inch by my self though, we'll see I guess. When I fab something myself it is usually a little off the first time and it works fine till I get to the track, then after bragging to my fellow racers about how I made it, it goes haywire with all their eyes on me.

Sounds like me!
Cageman, Thats exactly what happens every time I make a sophisticated part for my race car with my hammer ,torch and chop saw. All I have to do is say something like "this will work better" , and it's doomed to break or some other tradgedy will befall my invention. My wife has gotten real good at rolling her eyes at my mention of a new idea, . Now I've gotten used to religating my parts and idea to the barn, don't tell anybody about it until it works or fails at the track. And you thought us old guys aren't smart?? 'the old man'

Bracket
Hey cageman, email me at modracr41@hotmail.com and give me an address to send the pattern to. I'll have it out to you this weekend. Sanborn has all the dimensions, instructions, and mounting locations on the pattern.
This bracket goes between the pump and timing chain cover. It works like a charm. Let me know, good luck, and ................See ya at the track!! |

So when you say it goes between the pump and timing cover, wouldnt that space the pump out a 1/4 inch, or do you mill off the pnmp or cover, or am I just not understanding how it works.

Mill 1/4" off the timing cover.

Cageman, while you have the timing cover off, make a cooling modification to the timing cover. Measure the gap from the water pump impeller to the timing cover. Make a round aluminum disc about the size of the impeller and TIG weld the disc to the timing cover. Usually 1/4" aluminum is about right. This disc takes up space between the impeller and timing cover and helps reduce water pump cavitation at higher RPMs. I usually try to get the gap around .060".

Bill Richardson at RAM Automotive used to have the brackets you need. He sold them for $50 I believe. His # is 804-846-0043

I took my pump and visualized where it will go and that is exactly where it needs to be, Ill do that little weld job like you said and Im also welding the bypass hose shut and the heater hose deal to. I have cheasy plugs on them now and I might as well do that while its off.
If I made the bracket a 1/2 inch would that be a problem. Ill just mill off a 1/2 inch out of the cover instead. SOME IS GOOD MORE IS BETTER There I go reinventing the bracket again |

Probably not necessary
I don't think you would have a problem, but if you make it out of strong aluminum and tig weld the brace to the back, it is way more than sufficient. I thought like you, until I got it back, and there isn't any way that it's going to flex. It's really rigid at 1/4". Just my opinion and .....................See ya at the track!!
