Question Say What?

Never heard of that one. If the seals PREVENTED LUBRICATION of the bearings, they wouldn't last 5000 miles, much less on the drag strip.

Whats the application?

On a truck(full float) dana 60, the wheel brgs are lubed by gear oil.

I know that an 8 3/4 has a seal that is inboard of the wheel brgs, and that the bearings are lubed with grease(not gear oil). They must be packed prior to install.

I helped a guy out with a "car" dana 60 at the shop last year, but I can't remember how the seal is set up on it. I think it's the same as the 8 3/4 but don't hold me to it, I can't remember.

The seal does prevent axle fluid from getting into the bearings. At the same time, it prevents the fluid from leaking out into your brakes.

Default Seals

Not sure about danas but pretty sure the seals are outboard of the bearings. I KNOW THE SEALS ARE OUTSIDE OF THE BEARINGS ON (MY) 8 3/4 as I just went to the garage and looked mine over.

The seals in question are the axle tube seals. They are inboard on the 8¾. Take off your tire, pull the drum. Now remove the 5 nuts that are retaining the axle. Pull the axle out. You will see the bearing packed down at the spindle end and that it only has grease on it (no lube). Now look into the tube, you will see a larger diameter area (where the bearing sits) and just as the tube narrows, you will see the rubber seal, in question. That seal has a spring on the back of it that allows it to hug the axle shaft, to prevent axle lube from washing out the grease in the bearings and to also prevent lube from leaking into the brakes

Default Really?

Just my luck, mine are missing. Guess I was thinking of the old chebby jhit. Sorry. I guess I will have to put some in the axel before re-assembly. Looked it up in my Chiltons and there they were. I took the rear out of a 69 or 70 Plymouth wagon. I guess someone butchered it before I got it.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention. That's what I like about the chat, I can learn from it if I am just smart enough to think as I read. I use to change pumpkins every 2 weeks or so just playing around. You would think I would have spotted the problem then. Most likely too much .

Hmmm... Very od that those seals weren't there. They're generaly no good, if you try to pull them out, so I don't see why someone would have taken them.
